We used virtual mates and genetic algorithms to ask swordtail fish to design their ideal mate. Males all liked larger females but females did not share a clear preference for male appearance. Preprint: This short paper is my take on how to calculate/report absolute measures of time-difference-of-arrival positioning in #acoustictelemetry setups. Beyond reporting, these error measures can be passed to statespace models (like CTCRW) for very accurate post-processing estimates.

Pet peeve: folks that say they are "going to Africa" for a vacation instead of the country they are traveling to. Just say "Namibia". Nobody says "I'm going to Europe" when they are going to Croatia. Africa is an enormous continent 3x the size of Europe, with 54 unique countries.

Jay used our clonal mollies to ask does increasing environmental variation increases phenotypic variation? Turns out.... it doesn't! Mollies reared with pred cues swim more slowly & hide more but the magnitude of individuality remained the same! It seems individuals are unique no matter what...

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

I personally think anti-monopoly action is needed against the big publishers. I mean, academic publishing markets are not efficient! We have laws about this stuff already. But somehow I doubt any country is even thinking about it?

Last year, I publicly complained multiple times (see e.g. elevanth.org/blog/2025/07...) that the open access movement had been captured by publishers, and we are now worse off than before open access. Well people got mad at me for saying it. But I think things are still getting worse.
