New preprint! 🧵 Best #Cercozoa genome alert! For a decade, I’ve studied protist ecology through questions like who eats whom. But beyond “they eat this, they eat that,” what do #protists do to their environment, biochemically speaking? #protistsonsky @huesnaoeztoprak.bsky.social

🧬🦋 New preprint out! 🦋🧬 What mechanisms underlie large-scale chromosomal rearrangements? Why do rearrangement rates vary so massively across taxa? We explored these questions in Erebia butterflies, a genus with extraordinary chromosome number diversity, from 7 to 52! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

A quick notice: the Hi-C scaffolder InstaGRAAL is available on PyPI, with an -endtoend mode that should facilitate homemade scaffolding project. "pip install instagraal" and info here: github.com/koszullab/in... (non contractual movie since we removed the openGL visual long ago :-)

🧬 Preprint update with @worm-lab.bsky.social ! If you are aiming for a phased assembly, should you sequence @pacbio.bsky.social HiFi or @nanoporetech.com R10 reads? Whichever you have easier access to! The real question is: which assembler should you use based on your data? (1/2) #genomes

I am also among the numerous people who got rejected for #MSCA PF this time. I still got a high score and the project was deemed mostly excellent, so I'll be proud of this at least.

Does obligate asexuality necessarily lead to genomic decay? We found that ancient asexual lineages of oribatid mites have static genomes, frozen in time, whereas genomes of sexual lineages seem to be expanding.

Just got a what's app from a friend in the geosciences who had a collaborative grant proposal rejected with one reason being there were "too many women involved." Location: northern Europe. In case you were thinking "educated" scientists were necessarily less shitty about these sorts of things.
