For the first seven months of 2026, the US saw photovoltaics (both utility and small-scale) generate 72 percent of the electricity produce by burning coal. Barring a dramatic change in trends, we're probably about two years from solar passing coal for annual generation. Data from US EIA.

I remember getting a $300k grant 10 years ago to perform non-abelian braiding in 2 years It is funny, but it is also sad. "The people" want miracles from science, right now, and for free. If one is achieved, they move on immediately and just want more, different, fresh like distracted children.

On Friday I made my first-ever calls to congress to oppose funding cuts to NSF. It was super easy — it took just a couple minutes, and I read off a script provided by Save NSF (www.savensf.com). Genuinely unclear, but many NSF staff have wondered if it is designed to impound funds and reduce the budget this FY, in preparation for extremely large cuts next year. If you pause funding long enough, you just won't be able to get it all out the door. Unused money helps justify a larger cut.

Is a logical qubit: a) The divine ideal of what a qubit is meant to be: part of a system that allows quantum algorithms to be performed with effectively no noise? b) Anything encoded in a QEC code, even a small one with a limited gate set. Because these two things should really have different names.

The "hide the exponential" game Scott Aaronson has complained about for decades is alive and well: arxiv.org/abs/2412.13164 Yes, Shor's algorithm with 3 registers only needs very basic operations. No, you can't pack a 2^2000 level quantum state into 1 oscillator and then operate accurately on it.
