youtu.be/afKqIR5qJ8Q?... A really thoughtful discussion from great speakers with diverse backgrounds on how to genuinely use AI to make the world better. I'm glad to see a growing middle band of people having nuanced conversations about AI, it's impact and the realities of our economic systems.

Being some mixture of eco-socialist with anarchist anti-hierarchy values, who got into AI a decade ago because of it's potential to accelerate science and medicine, and now watching it send us BACKWARDS on climate goals in order to create the worst version of TikTok sure is...an experience.

My wife's smart watch just beeped to alert her that her BPM is over 100. Because she just pulled a legendary joker in Balatro that works REALLY well for her deck. I love this dork.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk have cut off funding for half of the health centers that serve 400,000 Virginians, forcing some to close, which could mean up to 200,000 Virginians are suddenly without healthcare www.vpm.org/news/2025-02...

For those who think the Treasury breach isn’t a big deal, just know that Elon and his Baby Hitler Hackers now also have your banking information. Those treasury payments have to go somewhere and if you’ve ever gotten a tax refund or a stimulus check your account numbers are in there too.

This isn't an exaggeration. Before Cockpit Resource Management became a thing, captains who acted like, and were deferentially treated like macho gods of the skies did things like let their planes run out of fuel or fly straight into the ground, and the other officers were too scared to stop them.

Three weeks ago the rather unchallenged expectation for the next decade could be pretty neatly summarized as "tech company hegemony". Then a paper comes out that lays out step by step how to do it, and they release the model freely, to be distributed, retrained and improved as we see fit.

If only the oaths of office of Congress had the same legal authority as literally any piece of paper normal people have to sign in their daily lives. If only there were some mechanism of accountability. Accountability not bound by ink will be found with blood. No one comes out of this better off.

I know a lot of people in progressive circles are, very understandably, anti-LLM/genAI. But regardless of who created it originally, R1 shares the recipe with everyone who wants to read it. We can build open models for medicine, science, learning and more, free of corporate control.

Nex @nex-addo.bsky.social · 29/01/2025
People are still judging LLMs pass/fail based on what they produce by themselves. Give them a few tools, force it to cite things for each statement, have another verify that the source and statements line up, and you have something far more reliable than most believe is possible right now.

I'm not an AI expert. But IMO, the biggest take away is that our biggest AI companies tried to make competition about how much money they could spend. Locking out others. Deepseek turned that upside down. Which could open the door to many smarter, more entrepreneurial competitors

Some thoughts and an apology. I'm going to step away from Bluesky for a bit. It's already enough dealing with the attacks on the trans community without being torn apart by my own community like this for a mistake.
I'm going to address this once. I compiled a list of federal grant and loan programs that would potentially be impacted by the order. I used AI as a starting point for that process and then went through and manually checked each to verify that those were a valid program that would be impacted. I also added my own. I then made that list publicly accessible and tried to update it with new information as it came in. I have nearly a decade of legal experience dealing with federal policy and administrative procedures. This wasn’t some random list I only relied on GPT for, it was a starting point that I built on in a rapidly moving situation. I fully disclosed it immediately. It was not something I was hiding.

Given the limited nature of posts, some believed that it was a definitive list from the admin. It was not. Others thought this was simply me asking GPT for a list and passing it off. It was not. It’s entirely on me for not clarifying or accurately state what the information was from. I apologize. I also did not clarify enough in the initial post what this list fully encompassed. I apologize.
Many are critical of any and all use of gen AI in any context due to its environmental costs, blatant theft of IP, and use by tech companies to destroy creative professions. These are all valid critiques and concerns. As a result, many will deem any and all use of gen AI as evil regardless of the context. While I may disagree with some characterizations and believe there are some proper and ethical uses of generative AI, many do not. I won’t change anyone’s mind about this. I believe it’s the capitalistic use of gen AI to expand big techs power that is destructive rather than the underlying technology but that’s neither here nor there.

I do not monetize my online presence. I purposefully do not make any money off of my online presence at all. I do not intentionally seek clout.

The stock market is an index of how efficiently workers can be seperated from their money, and the fact that pensions and other critical investments for the working class are tied to it is the economic equivilant of using human shields.

Nex @nex-addo.bsky.social · 28/01/2025
It's incredibly telling that the "economy's" (see, the stock market held overwhelmingly by the already wealthy with pensions thrown in as hostages) reaction to a free, cheap to produce, cheap to run model that can do good things for everyone (once censoring's been removed) is to aggressively crash.

What’s interesting about the Panama/Greenland thing is not whether or not it happens. It’s how Trump has expanded our collective notion of what’s politically possible. I wonder how durable that will be, and what it would look like for a left-leaning POTUS to use that “anything could happen” feeling.
