It depends on how you define it. Yes, Squaresoft only did the localization and promotion in North America, but that was instrumental in its success here. Capcom USA was inexperienced with text-heavy RPGs. Squaresoft made up for the deficit, and promoted it as, "from the makers of Final Fantasy."

They had so many bangers even earlier. Breath of Fire - 1994, Final Fantasy VI - 1994, Chrono Trigger - 1995. Those 3 are all in my top 10 RPGs of all time. That said, the Mana games were great. I loved Trials of Mana back in 1995. It's an underappreciated franchise for sure.
