Still

The day I saw my first dead body...
Just dead, dead,
Not burned, or shot, or half missing from
A bomb made of a soda bottle and nails...
The day I saw it, I wasn't scared.
I wasn't sad, or weirded out. Not at first, not until the body was gone.
I was peaceful. I just...looked at it.
He was just laying there.
In a bed.
He was different, but I didn't quite know
How.
Maybe the little movements,
The ones we don't even know we make.
They were missing.
He was just a little too still.
He looked the same.
His eyes were closed. I wouldn't figure out until around two bodies later that
That was the big change.
The eyes. His were closed though, and There was a familiar blanket.
The room was the same as always.
Just a little too still.

It just forced me to sit in the front row
and watch the circus
No refunds.
No more disappearing into the crowd.
No more leaving when the act got uncomfortable.
No more pretending I couldn’t see
what was happening right in front of me.
I had to watch the old patterns perform.
The grief.
The fear.
The shame.
The people I kept trying to save.
The parts of myself I kept abandoning.
Sobriety didn’t make the circus disappear.
It handed me a ticket
and said,
Now stay.
 Watch.
 Learn who you are  when you’re no longer running away.
