#NZpol I put it a similar way over on Facebook -
Perhaps you could remember your past National Party leader, “To engage with crime, Muldoon built "unusually close relationships" with criminal gangs; he personally favoured Black Power, and he and his wife Thea met with them on several occasions.”

He was populist and crass, and deservedly criticised for that, but his work with gangs did have purpose, using a stick and carrot approach to try move gangs forward, including work schemes and rugby league.

It’s clear they mean this in a similar constructive way. If you can’t see that, I guess that’s on you. Just 'bashing' people (gangs in this case) is very unlikely to encourage them to move forward.

A return to elements of this was recommended by New Zealand-based research, including from the Prime Minister’s Chief Science Advisor at the time (2023).

See:

I too think politicians hanging around with criminals is disgusting. Especially when those criminals are the president of a political party and the courts give that man name suppression to protect his party from being associated with his rape of minors.

National is in the DNA of Opportunity's leadership.
"Impartiality" - harder & harder to maintain with a straight face:
Quilae Wong's mother, Margaret Malcolm, has a long and close association with former National Party leader & Minister, Judith Collins - including acting as a snr adviser (esp during Oravida controversy).
Daniel Eb, as we now know, would vote National in default of Opportunity.
