#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1908: A white mob begins a brutal two-day attack on Black residents in Springfield, Ill., devastating the community and spurring the creation of the NAACP. Many Black citizens fled Springfield forever, but remnants of their neighborhood have been preserved. /1

African Americans stand near some of the homes burned during the race riot in Springfield, Ill., Aug. 14-16, 1908. Driven by racial animosity and fueled by the local vice districts, a white mob of thousands systematically terrorized the city’s Black population. The fact that the riot erupted in the hometown of Abraham Lincoln made it especially shocking to the nation, and it served as the direct catalyst for the creation of the NAACP. During excavation for a rail project in 2014, archaeologists uncovered the physical footprints of the predominantly Black neighborhood historically known as the “Badlands.” The artifacts serve as vivid material testimony to 48 hours of racial violence.
