We live in a country where the state arrests pensioners holding up placards asking for peace rather than genocide on terrorism charges, whilst it sympathises with the so-called "legitimate concerns" of extreme racists putting lives at risk. I'm sorry, but who the fuck became a Labour MP for this?

Far right extremism costs lives. These people are trying to hold the UK hostage to their racism. And it's not just the RNLI: we're hearing from all kinds of charities whose vital helping work is being threatened by the sort of people who would rather let a human being drown than welcome a newcomer.

We only returned a few hundred people a year under Dublin Convention. Irregular Channel crossings are driven by successive governments shutting down safe and alternative routes. Establishing safe and regularised routes is the answer to irregular migration, not more violent returns agreements.

Bill Bryson on the RNLI in "The Road to Little Dribbling : more notes from a small island" (2015)
I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people - teachers, plumbers, the guy
who runs the pub - drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that? The RNLI - I looked this up later - is an organization run by volunteers, supported entirely by public donations. It maintains 233 stations around the coast of Britain and averages twenty-two call-outs per day. It saves 350 lives a year on average.

This is what banning people from work means. Skilled, talented people with so much to share feeling like they've lost a part of themselves. It's time to lift the ban, and let people work.
Quote reads: “I have the skills and experience to contribute to society, but I cannot use them. It makes me feel empty and worthless at times, like I’ve lost a part of myself.
I’ve been doing everything I can to stay positive... I want to be ready to work as soon as I can.”

No: it isn’t “genuinely bad news for the far right” that the framing & salience of its pet subject has been adopted by the entire political-media system. That assumption mistakes the far right‘s demands as genuine & limited, & thus manageable, rather than being a proxy or wedge issue for much worse.
