Traffic circles are a huge missed opportunity. I volunteered a layered planting design w/ native plants to enhance the ecological value of this one. We can't have this in the US b/c the landscape industry can't care for it, become commercialized, based on labor and chemicals rather than knowledge.
A picture from the late summer. A large traffic circle island with plantings and no turf grass. A 15' Sugar Maple Tree in the center contrasts the other finer textures with a dark black-green hue. Diverse plantings with various shades of tan, light and medium green, along with ground cover and the remnant flowers of 'Fireworks' Goldenrod.A traffic island planting showing the dormant winter form of perennials, sedges, and ground covers. Colors range from yellow-tan, to light tan, and shades of brown.

Exactly this. The Irwins are why I started Crawlies. My (out of print) Crawlies book is dedicated to Steve & my copy is signed by Terri, Bindi & Robert. Terri is also a HUGE inspiration for me. Sometimes it is 100% okay to meet your heroes! If they're the Irwins. Paying it forward! #becurious

Initial thoughts: Love Blue jays. This capture, simply breathtaking. Deepens my humility and commitment to advocate for all nature. Deserving of more peanuts.

Another incredible photographer here on Bluesky, what a treat. Captures of nature and immersing myself in her sublime beauty are what help me revive, energize, and thrive. Thank you, artists of all genres for sharing your visions!

Good morning Bluesky! Happy Sunday to all of you! Today I’m grateful for color in our brilliant world. Having relatives who were colorblind, as some of you may be, I realize what a wonder and a blessing it is to have color vision. And imagine — many animals see an even greater range. 💛🧡

Even though not a native plant to my continent, taking in some Macro Lily is food for my soul. Plant magic.

NATURE SLIPS Politicians fail us every day they don’t put nature first. Nothing is worth it to risk the lives of billions of animals, humans & plants for. It’s time to give politicians an ultimatum, either they act for people & planet, or we have no use for them. Time’s up! #photography #resist

The thought of potentially loosing employees to larger companies that can afford to pay for health ins. is depressing. We do good work here for people, pollinators, and planet and people like it here, but right now they have to choose between a job they love and health care. Doesn't seem right.

Some friendly Bluesky people suggested peat-free seed starting mixes last season, but the products weren’t available here. It looks like there are more options this month. Please suggest products or maybe recipes for cutting dependence on #peat. Thanks! 🎃 I need better seedlings next Spring.

🌼 sweet everlasting 🌿 Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium #nativeplants #ecoregion71 #flowerreport #bloomscrolling #bloomsky
a cluster of over half a dozen small, conical to cylindrical composite flowers. each flowerhead has a small disk of light yellow florets tightly packed at it's "nose;" there are no ray florets, but the disk surrounded by a steep array of overlapping, feathery, white involucral bracts. they wrap around the disk florets tightly at first, but as the flowerhead matures they start peeling away. there are several still-blooming flowers on the near side of this cluster, but those on the far side have faded and their white bracts are opening up.the flowers in this panicle at the top of the stem of a sweet everlasting are arranging in clusters of around half a dozen or so flowerheads at the tip of each stem branch. few of the flowers are fresh and show a spot of yellow from the disk florets at their tip; mostly, that yellow has faded to tan, and the formerly tightly wrapped bracts around the florets are unfurling, taking on a loose, feathery appearance. a few of the flowerheads have fully gone to seed, developing hairy tufts that disperse on the wind.a sweet everlasting, camouflaged in the drying tall grass of a savanna alongside a thin young tree. its lower stem and the leaves thereupon have turned dry and brown. a few leaves near the top (around knee-high) are still green or yellowing. at the very top, there is a panicle of conical flowers. many of the flowers have gone to seed, becoming loose and fluffy.
