My colleagues & I recently discussed possible limits to free speech. I argue that regardless of what the appropriate limits are, people with power have incentives to try to repress speech to a degree that's impermissible. When this happens, we need to push back. And I argued that's happening now.

This, from Dennett, I wish I'd taken to heart earlier in my life. www.themarginalian.org/2014/03/28/d...
How to compose a successful critical commentary:

1 You should attempt to re-express your target’s position so clearly, vividly, and fairly that your target says, “Thanks, I wish I’d thought of putting it that way.”
2 You should list any points of agreement (especially if they are not matters of general or widespread agreement).
3 You should mention anything you have learned from your target.
4 Only then are you permitted to say so much as a word of rebuttal or criticism.

It was a battle and Minnesota won.
The biggest lesson that we can learn from Minnesota is that we can win. I had started to lose hope back in October. We in the United States seemed far from being able to play the incredibly important role that the labor movement has in almost every other country that has successfully prevented authoritarian consolidation in the last fifty years. But I believe that in January, we saw the power of a community standing up. This wasn't in the history books about the 1960s or the 1930s. This wasn't in newspaper articles about Argentina or France. This was right here in the Upper Midwest.
To see the community move with so much power and unity is really inspiring.

In 1997, a teenager who came to the US as a baby spent 10 months in jail for a series of bad decisions. For that, he got his green card stripped. Because Laos didn't take deportations, he got to stay. He turned his life around, raised a family, worked hard, followed the law. Then ICE came for him.
Lue Yang had just finished his overnight shift at a Michigan automotive plant when two unmarked cars with tinted windows pulled into the parking lot and blocked him in.
A man in body armor approached him. Mr. Yang knew that it was Immigration and Customs Enforcement. And, in those early morning hours of July 15, 2025, he knew why the agent was there.
Nearly three decades earlier, as a teenager, Mr. Yang had spent 10 months in jail after he and three friends were caught with stolen cash, electronics and cameras in the trunk of their car.
The consequences had not ended there. Mr. Yang was living in the United States as a war refugee. After his conviction, he lost his permanent residency status and was ordered deported to Laos, the country his family had fled.
For 23 years, the government did not enforce the final removal order. Mr. Yang went back to school, got married, had six children, built a career and became a leader in the Hmong community in Lansing. He checked in with ICE as required. He was never arrested again, said his lawyer, Nancy Xiong.
Now ICE had come for him as part of President Trump’s deportation campaign.
