One unexpected encounter in the first chapter of THE GOLDEN BOWL was Poe's ARTHUR GORDEN PYM, and it's the dazzling whiteness bit that is remembered. I'm glad I had read @natewolff.bsky.social & @rezekjoe.bsky.social 's version of Poe.
A page from Henry James's THE GOLDEN BOWL which includes all passage describing a memory of reading Poe's GORDON PYM,
"the story of the ship-wrecked Gordon Pym, who, drifting in a small boat further toward the North Pole--or was it the South?-- than any one had ever done, found at a given moment before him a thickness of white air that was like a dazzling curtain of light, concealing as darkness conceals, yet of the colour of milk or of snow. There were moments when he felt his own boat move upon some such mystery."

Somehow I missed the charming detail that Lyndsey Fifield falsely claimed to have insider info that the Tufts student who was abducted and imprisoned solely for writing an op-ed in the student newspaper (as revealed in state dept’s own memos!) was a terrorist.
Lyndsey Fifield g+ a year ago
Mahmoud Khalil and Rümeysa Öztürk were not targeted for advocacy against Israel - they are being held accountable for destruction of property, organizing violent actions, making threats to Jewish students, and distributing materials funded by state designated terror groups. You'll be surprised to learn you can't promote terrorism and "death to America" while you're here on a student visa or green card. Let's see an update.

Interesting assertion, all I've seen is that Ozturk wrote an op-ed. Do you have evidence otherwise?

Her arrest had nothing to do with an op-ed - that was the lie they ran with and you just nom nom nommed that talking point right up without question.

Look, Middlemarch is a great novel. It complexly mediates class conflict, the commodification of all life, emerging ideological structures in Victorian capitalism. I just personally think it’s more impressive when a novel does that through a story about a guy who hates a weird fish.

I'm sorry, no. "Transparency" is simply not an indefiniteness that shadows forth the heartless voids & immensities of the universe, stabbing us from behind with the thought of annihilation; a dumb blankness, full of meaning, from which we shrink.

Jesus’s 3 days in the tomb and his resurrection was typologically prefigured by Jonah’s 3 days in and escape from the belly of a whale, so Easter is a great day to meditate on the inscrutable malice of a specific fish.

FYI today's a great day to start reading this novel. It begins on April 1st — and it's widely considered Melville's most accessible and fun work after Clarel!
title page of The Confidence-ManCHAPTER I.
A MUTE GOES ABOARD A BOAT ON THE MISSISSIPPI.
At sunrise on a first of April, there appeared, suddenly as Manco Capac at the lake Titicaca, a man in cream-colors, at the water-side in the city of St. Louis.

His cheek was fair, his chin downy, his hair flaxen, his hat a white fur one, with a long fleecy nap. He had neither trunk, valise, carpet-bag, nor parcel. No porter followed him. He was unaccompanied by friends. From the shrugged shoulders, titters, whispers, wonderings of the crowd, it was plain that he was, in the extremest sense of the word, a stranger.

Honored to blurb @rafaelwalker.bsky.social ‘s brilliant and gorgeous new book — alongside the incomparable Jen Fleissner no less!
Cover of REALISM AFTER THE INDIVIDUAL by Rafael Walker
"In Realism after the Individual, Walker offers an original and forceful reading of 'second generation' realists. For Walker, these authors approach realism as a flexible genre rife with unexpected potential for contesting an ideology of individualism that had come to seem ill-suited for a new age of incorporation and association. Transatlantic in its conceptual framing and invaluable for both teaching and research on these periods, this elegantly argued and necessary book will have wide appeal."
