The music teacher's fundraising pitch: "Kids who study music score better on math tests!" It's never "Kids who study math make better musicians." Nor ever "Studying music makes life better." If it's too hard to quantify (and therefore maximize), then it's not going to be valued under capitalism.

One unexpected encounter in the first chapter of THE GOLDEN BOWL was Poe's ARTHUR GORDEN PYM, and it's the dazzling whiteness bit that is remembered. I'm glad I had read @natewolff.bsky.social & @rezekjoe.bsky.social 's version of Poe.

We flew Budapest-->Reno on Sept. 10, with lots of delays but no missed connections, arriving home late late that night. A friendly Hungarian photographer had taken pictures of me & the 2-year-old daughter, and had my email to send them: an urgent, concerned email was the first thing in my inbox.
