Woohoo! Spooky season is upon us, and I am starting my yearly watch of horror movies a bit early, with a film that is maybe a bit on the nose with its metaphors but I loved it all the same. Intentional or not, it's in fascinating dialogue with a 2003 Ray Wise Lin Shaye film. #spookyfilmfest #1
A picture of three young adults at the side of a car. One is leaning against the hood at the far side of the frame. Closer to the viewer, one is standing on the running board leaning against an open drivers side door. Closest to the viewer another is leaning out of the back seat window. They are looking at something offscreen to the left. The whole picture is tilted on its side. The title (It Ends) is in the middle.

One of my biggest media regrets is not getting to see "I Saw the TV Glow" on the big screen. I made sure to catch Jane Schoenbrun's follow-up at @lighthousecinema.bsky.social last night. A stunning exploration of a lot of things, but especially how fandom and media can shape who we are.
The poster for the 2026 movie Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Two women walk towards the camera in a snowy scene. One is dressed in a full-length dress and robe. The other is dressed in a t-shirt and underwear. They are both covered in blood. The tagline at the top reads "Blood. Lust."

Well, I had a sort of a whirlwind trip to NYC to look at the New Yorker Records at NYPL. Not to be maudlin, but I remember visiting the lions as a child and thinking, "wouldn't it be great to study here." Mission accomplished!

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

Seriously, everyone, listen. Librarians and archive workers are a gift from some idea of something like heaven. I have personally recently made the lives of a couple of archival librarians harder, just by me being tunnel-focused on my things and being selfishly unaware. All hail the librarians.

that's right, Bruce Campbell www.mensjournal.com/entertainmen...
When asked how it’s been for him to see the series transform since its indie beginnings way back in 1981 with director Sam Raimi, Campbell revealed his one issue with the recent installments.

“I’d like more humor back in. The three features have been mostly humorless, and I personally have a problem with that,” he said, echoing a sentiment shared among some of the franchise’s fans. “There’s no point for these to get too grim. You can be scary without being grim.”

“A little more humor wouldn’t kill you,” he added. “And one hero that you really can root for. Ash is an idiot, but you want him to survive.”

“Modern filmmakers love to color their movies like a David Fincher movie, like a hospital room, you know?” Campbell continued. “Gray-green, like a garage. Garage lighting. And so, okay, it’s a choice. It’s not mine. I think even a horror movie can look pretty. Why not throw them off? Make it all look pretty and wonderful, and then let them have it.”

Back to work today!
An image from the 1980 film The Shining shows Jack Nicholson in profile sitting at a large table with a typewriter, a container of writing implements, cigarettes, and an ashtray. His chair is pushed back and he is leaning forward, head on the edge of the desk like he is passed out or sleeping. The arm that is closer to the camera is hanging limp. There are very large windows behind him.

#OTD in 1979, American author Octavia E. Butler's breakout novel "Kindred" is published. Her most famous novel, it’s a harrowing "time-travel" story where a Black woman from the 1970s is repeatedly pulled back to a plantation in the antebellum South. #booksky #litsky #scifi #SpeculativeFiction
A composite image features a soulful portrait of Octavia E. Butler (1947–2006) and an inset of her seminal 1979 novel, Kindred. Butler, the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur "Genius" Grant, is shown in a close-up, leaning her head thoughtfully against her right hand. Her expression is one of calm, profound contemplation, with a faint, knowing smile playing on her lips. She has short, salt-and-pepper hair and wears a vibrant, patterned purple and blue garment with a long, slender gold earring.

Layered on the right is the original book cover of Kindred. The cream-colored cover displays the title in bold, black lettering above a surreal illustration of two Black women's profiles facing away from each other, joined at the neck to form the shape of an hourglass. This imagery perfectly captures the book's themes of time travel and the inescapable ties between the past and present. The overall composition is warm and intellectual, honoring a literary giant whose work used speculative fiction to explore the complexities of race, power, and human survival.

The title screen for The Abominable Dr. Phibes has the title in large light blue letters in a real creepy art-deco type style. The title is over a background of a wall behind indoor trees with, in the center, steps leading up to something that is difficult to see but which is actually an organ with Dr. Phibes (Vincent Price) playing. He is wearing a large black cloak with a hood and has his back to the audience.
