Ofwat appoints Grant Thornton to help improve South East Water performance l £6m wasted. Similar exercise at Thames Water yielded zilch. SEW has £1.7bn debt, can't raise new money, loses 100m litres of water a day to leaks, customers fleeced for decades. End the scam. Nationalise water.

Cool. Cool. Now where do we get uranium from again? Oh yeah, Kazakhstan, which shares a huge land border with Russia and China. But it's totally ok, neither Russia or China have expansionist ambitions.

Yes I totally agree. And there will always be small microprocessors that need efficiency and cannot afford to run garbage collection etc. There must be an argument for being able to trace function calls and raw memory allocations when debugging mission critical code too?

I miss C. These days people can use type-safe and memory-safe languages and compilers, and just throw RAM and CPU at inefficiencies. It is probably for the best, but I liked having to be disciplined about memory management.

Explaining the danger behind AI distorting the truth is worthwhile, but it can be easily dismissed as an academic exercise. It is not engaging on an emotional level. I think that demonstrating how AI can destroy the meaning that can be found in everyday human experiences is more engaging.

Hannah @nah.cat · 03/10/2026
Obviously compared to the damage untruthful output from AI can do in other domains, fake cat videos can seem trivial. But I think it is worth examining this small theft of joy because it is what AI does writ small, in an easily explainable form.

Hannah @nah.cat · 03/10/2026
One of my genuine and heartfelt beefs with the proliferation of AI content is the fake cat videos. Now, when I see a video of a cat being a weirdo I just move on because I won't invest time and energy trying to work out if it is real. AI has stolen the joy and meaning from cat videos.
110
Hannah @nah.cat · 03/10/2026
Why would I want to watch videos of cats being weirdos that are generated by AI? The joy of cats being weirdos is the reality and relatability of domestic cat behaviour. You might as well generate videos of cats smoking and drinking pints of you are going to fake it.

But yeah Shin Ramyun is the best compromise. I do like Indomie mi goreng too. Indomie used to do a larger packet with jumbo noodles that were perfect, but they don't seem to be available any more. The standard packets are a nice snack though.

The best instant noodles I have found are the Prima Taste singapore curry la mian. Expensive but lovely, if you like coconut-y, fish-y flavours (I get the curry version because I am not so keen on fish, and the fish paste flavour in it is very low key).

Anyway, I officially have D-cup boobs now. Measure your busts and get properly fitting underwear, gals. 👍 (I am getting weird, conflicting "the world is going to shit" vs "but I have boobs" vibes that I am having difficulty resolving.)

I like a buldak but I can only have it in moderation because the spicy + sticky is too much. Lovely flavours though and surprisingly nice, firm noodles.

Of course this is the reason I suspect Wes Streeting wanted to take contracting off NHS England and bring it into the Department of Health, so ministers could make decision to appease tech bro donors rather than clinicians, who have to use the software asking awkward questions.

Obviously I am not proposing that the government should go as nuts as Silicon Valley. But surely we are beyond the point of letting the Thatcherite / Monetarist cry of "there is no alternative" go unquestioned? I mean currently Healey isn't even matching Burnham's Blancmange Revolution talk.

Hannah @nah.cat · 02/10/2026
Why do we capitulate to Thatcher's trite "every housewife with a weekly budget" nonsense to this day. Look at the debt literally being created out of nothing to fund the mad AI buildout. What kind of prudent housewifery is The Market applying there? Yet Government must have Fiscal Rules?

Fiscal headroom is not a pot of money sitting at the Bank of England. It is simply the estimated margin by which the government is forecast to meet the fiscal rules it has chosen to impose upon itself.

We have all felt that struggle to find meaning and purpose in acts that are beyond our control. The anxiety of mapping out our own behaviours - what could I have done differently? - in the face of loss that was never in our gift to control or prevent.

Some of the thought of that time is really beautiful. It is easy to laugh at making up names for demons, but remember that the hierarchy of heaven and the various orderings of virtues started a thousand years prior and much of that was done to integrate ancient Greek philosophy into Catechism.

Hannah @nah.cat · 02/10/2026
It's funny, but honestly I think it is really powerful to see minds at work, doing philosophical enquiry at a time when so much was unknown and so much must have seemed capricious. Think about how threatening and chaotic floods, crop blights or unexpected cold winters must have been.

Homeland, first season Maybe I just love the microcosm / macrocosm thing? The storm in Macbeth and all that. For its time, I thought the portrayal of bipolar was good but I might have to revisit the show to confirm that?

Hannah @nah.cat · 26/09/2026
Battlestar Galactica I think the first three seasons are hugely underrated. The conclusion of the season two cliffhanger and the conclusion of season three are incredible. But I thought what made it thrive was the microcosm of interwoven human dramas, not the big-spaceships-go-bang.

This has actually been sober reading for me. I can't bring myself to put any show on the list into a Top Ten. TV shows never seem to know how to end. But I thought I would list a few personal standouts.....

Whatever its technical and other merits, Breaking Bad was one-note grief porn and should be nowhere near a Top Ten. Hill I will die on.

I do not have any problem conceding that The Red Wedding changed the culture. in fact I think it gave a lot of white dude showrunners absolute brain worms and vastly increased the number of narratively pointless shock deaths we all had to sit through from someone trying to get a piece of that hype

My place of work has just imposed budgets on AI token spend so that's any token-intensive AI workflows fucked. I have been vocal about the inevitability of per-token charging for multiple years, so I am not sure whether to be sad, gleeful or disgusted about this happening.

Happier post: rainbow over New Asgard, from the weekend.
Photograph of a harbour at low tide. The harbour walls merge into rocks below, which are only exposed at low tide. Several small boats are resting on the muddy sea bottom. In the distance some cliffs rise from the sea and, over them, sitting low in the sky, a rainbow has appeared.
