Our new paper assesses relationships between wildfire rate of spread, area burned, and severity in western + boreal North American conifer forests 2012-2023. Take home message in the title: faster--> bigger--> more severe. With @grumpyunclesean.bsky.social, @jessforplanet.bsky.social and more! 🔥🧪🌍

Faster, bigger, more severe: Extreme wildfire spread sets the stage for forest ecosystem change in western and boreal North America

Western Europe recorded its hottest June-July on record, enduring the fourth heatwave since May with severe drought conditions that contributed to exceptional wildfire activity. Climate signals are becoming increasingly interconnected and increasingly difficult to ignore.

Excited to share our new paper! 🌲🌳Using high-resolution forest mortality maps across Luxembourg, we found bark beetle spread drives conifer die-off during the 2018-2020 drought, while broadleaf mortality tracks loss of large trees. Topography? Surprisingly minor. doi.org/10.5194/bg-23-2985-2026
