We did field work last week in the large area affected by the Västmanland wildfire that happened 12 years ago. Lots of deciduous regeneration and a thick Polytrichum moss layer!

Every expt is humbling—I learn how much I don’t know about forests. This latest expt was no exception. In response to 13 yrs of N addition, we measured fungal mass (dead/alive), chitin conc, root tannin conc, and potential genetic capacity of EcM fungi. No trt effects detected!

In their 2021 study, @j-karst.bsky.social et al found that 13 years of N addition in boreal aspen forests was linked with more "high biomass" ectomycorrhizas. Does that translate to more fungal necromass in the soil?...

We are growing birch seedlings in sterile conditions, and two weeks ago we inoculated half of them with a soil solution. Really neat to see the mycorrhizas develop in real time (the photo on the right, with brown-ish medium)!
