Keeping up with the heat: Long-term dynamics and plasticity of heat tolerance in a tropical plant community Georgia G. Hernández, et al. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/AXS96W... Summary also available in Spanish. @martijnslot.bsky.social #PlantScience
A multi-panel grid plot with four vertical panels representing the years 2017, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The vertical axis lists 35 tropical plant species, and the horizontal axis measures leaf heat tolerance, T50, ranging from 48 to 54 Celsius. Within each annual panel, horizontal rows show a point for the median T50 value and a horizontal line for the 95 percent confidence interval, sorted from highest tolerance at the bottom to lowest at the top. Data points are color-coded by plant family: Cannaceae in light blue, Costaceae in dark blue, Heliconiaceae in light green, Marantaceae in dark green, Musaceae in pink, and Zingiberaceae in red. A thick vertical gray line cuts through the center of each annual panel to mark the overall community mean, which visibly shifts from its lowest point in 2017 to its highest peak in 2022.

Why do some plants open their stomata at high temperatures? Our new paper shows that this behaviour is optimal, and a crucial thermoregulation strategy. 🍃 However, this only emerges when the leaf energy balance is fully integrated in the optimisation. This is missing from global models at present!
