how about some good news: new cat just dropped!!!!

a photo of a small, spotted wild cat, with orange fur and brown circular markings, staring up with big golden eyes.

Meet the First New Cat Species Discovered in 100 Years

A small, spotted tiger cat from Bolivia may just be the beginning of a wave of new small cat species.

This 10-year-old male tiger cat is the first of his species (named Leopardus tilcayo) known to science. He is approximately 18 inches from head to end of body and weighs only 3 pounds, making him smaller than the average domestic cat. This video was captured at the Senda Verde Animal Refuge in Bolivia’s Yungas region, where he currently resides.

not going to relitigate all of this for the millionth time because lines have been drawn for nearly a decade and mileage is allowed to vary. This is what I wrote about BoTW's degradation a few years back, though, and I stand by it.

Quoted text from an article that reads:

"The other is on weapon durability, which honestly confounds me. The battle system is improved because of the limited weapon durability. Weapons are a resource, and your actions must be considered within that context. Breath of the Wild is not the first game to have weapon durability play a central role in combat, by any means, but it is maybe one of the most dynamic games with that concept. When a weapon breaks, its final blow will be a critical one: this is a point of strategy. Weapons can also be hurled directly at enemies, and will then break after a critical hit: this is also a point of strategy. Different weapons mean Link is doing more than just swinging a sword around: you must become an expert with axes, lances, short swords, long swords, claymores, ancient weaponry, advanced weaponry, magic rods, the weapons of monsters dropped mid-battle. Each has its place against certain enemy types, and while not required to dispose of foes — the game is too open for that — the options and strategies you can build from those facts broadens the scope and enjoyment of combat."

Second quoted paragraph that reads:

"To me, a weapon breaking mid-battle and what your next move could be — do you bring out another weapon, or pick up one of your foes’ instead? — is no different than running out of ammo for a particular gun in a tense Gears of War firefight. You’ve got enemies to dispose of and options to do it with, just not the option you were just using. Figure it out, and fast. It adds a layer of complexity and danger to battle that’s been missing from Zelda for a while, and it’s highly welcome from where I’m sitting. As games critic Dia Lacina recently said to me on Twitter when discussing this subject, “When I run out of ammo in a shooter they don’t give me a skeleton arm to beat a mfer to death with, that’s for sure.” Breath of the Wild does, though. Breath of the Wild does."

emulation is preservation 🎮🌱 (1/7) (cw: grappling with trauma, cPTSD, and dysmorphia) #personal #vent #oolongnoonart #emulation #retroconsoles

i've been thinking about old videogames lately

standalone, solid pieces of fun
no day one patch, a completed work

you could come back to them like an old book

there were also games i never got to for whatever reason

ones just out of my reach
or that i've never heard of

i wound up learning about emulators
and got myself a handheld retro console to play roms with

i've been really enjoying this

(sketches of a retroid pocket 5/G2 and an anbernic 406H, third-party handhelds that can run emulators)

I think the clearest evidence of their long-term strategy is the Switch 2 lineup. If they only cared about opportunity cost they wouldn't have put the 3D Mario team on DK or the Smash director on Air Riders. It's why they have the variety they do. Not to mention staff retention in spite of failures.

I really hate the “I don’t owe anyone anything” mentality because we actually owe each other and this planet a lot. You don’t have to be selfless all the time or burn yourself out but you should be kind and helpful and compassionate to the best of your ability. We need to care about each other more
