thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart. i had no idea that my comic would resonate with so many others. i've written down some silly afterthoughts and figured i could share them as well. keep playing and make good memories 🎮🌿💕 #emulation #retroconsoles

the text for this vent comic was written around 2 years ago. due to current events, i felt driven to express my frustrations with life, past trauma finding ways to still affect me, and everything, even my hobbies. even if it didn't make sense

while i got lost in the sauce, i realized it sounds like i'm an original hardware hater when oh my god nooo what else can i say? we're out here loving games!!! @ games, please survive!!! LOL my friends and i have been trying to pick up physical copies of random games lately, from both old and new consoles, just for the sake of everything...

(photo of my original grey model DS) meet johnny, my old DS from childhood! i played 999 on an R4 that was gifted to me on him a bit before i wrote the text for this comic so... that probably explains a lot

i also wanted to mention that i have seen the conversation regarding things like disc rot and how much it actually affects game preservation. it sounds like if games are well taken care of, they'll be pretty okay for a long while, and the actual failure of cds and cartridges depends on the system and circumstance. even that is actually fascinating to me, but for the sake of my artistic emotional outburst, i hope my symbolism and anxieties could come through. tbh i think the real problem stems from things like AI/the ram crisis and needing to establish better digital ownership and availability...

anyway, we're really lucky as a whole when we can preserve original hardware AND data dumps! i admire people who put active effort into keeping consoles in tact and educating others on even the most obscure stuff, or to the people who work tirelessly to make emulation, human-made translations, and de-comps possible, especially in a world where we can lose anything at any time. whether you're playing on an original console or not, a chance to experience a game is truly precious as long as it won't be forgotten

lastly, let me introduce the emulation handhelds that i featured:

(photo of my hand holding a white anbernic rg cube XX, the title screen of kirby dreamland 3 on it) anbernic rg cube XX - my first ever! so darling! my gut-react recommendation to anyone who wants to try one. i passed this to my gf once i upgraded

(photo of a white anbernic 406H with the title screen of monster hunter dos) anbernic 406H - i love the 4:3 screen and if it weren't for the fact i panic bought something beefier when the ram crisis was in full force, i would have settled on this. perfect ergo in my opinion

(photo of a turquoise retroid pocket G2 with the ES-DE front end menu) retroid pocket G2 - my endgame retro handheld. pretty strong and handles PS2/GC/Wii/3DS. i either can't put it down, or i have incredible choice paralysis over the amount of games i can play

if you have the funds for it, enjoy searching for used copies and consoles at second hand shops and take good care of them as you play! or consider picking up a retro handheld (though a lot of the higher end ones are getting pricey, there's a lot of them under 100 USD that can do PS1 and earlier or more), reusing an old android phone, or just using your computer and learning about emulation! you have to do a bit of research but there are lots of really easy to follow guides online to help you get started. people have left ample traces behind to discover and reclaim what came before...

it might sound complicated at first, but it's worth it to put in the effort. but you have to try! i genuinely believe even being able to play an old game to the end means you've kept a piece of culture alive, but it takes work from all of us.

hmm... it's actually deeply ironic that the 406H and G2 are both discontinued devices... and i forgot to mention you do need an SD card for handhelds, which is... ah well, i'm sorry... the more i think about it, the more it makes my wild feelings even more intense and it's a bit too much for me. i gotta stop overthinking and go play more games now, and so should you!

thank you for reading.
i hope we all make it

emulation is preservation 🎮🌱 (1/7) (cw: grappling with trauma, cPTSD, and dysmorphia) #personal #vent #oolongnoonart #emulation #retroconsoles

i've been thinking about old videogames lately

standalone, solid pieces of fun
no day one patch, a completed work

you could come back to them like an old book

there were also games i never got to for whatever reason

ones just out of my reach
or that i've never heard of

i wound up learning about emulators
and got myself a handheld retro console to play roms with

i've been really enjoying this

(sketches of a retroid pocket 5/G2 and an anbernic 406H, third-party handhelds that can run emulators)

My illustration for the Monster Hunter Zine: Happy Hunting! I spent so much time in the Shrine Ruins looking for relics and just taking in the antiquity. 🎍 It was such an honor to be a part of this collaboration! #monsterhunter #mhrise #mhart #oolongnoonart @monsterhunterzine.bsky.social

An illustration depicting a scene in the Shrine Ruins of Monster Hunter Rise. My hunter, Setsuna, stands in a clearing beside their Shikigami Palamute, Fuu. Setsuna is wearing a kitsune mask and is holding their Fox Halberd. There are old Canyne statues in the foreground and background, as well as spiribirds floating around. The full moon shines through the bamboo thicket.

I can finally reveal my @monsterhunterzine.bsky.social piece- Nergigante, a scourge to Elder Dragons. It was an blast working on this, and everyone was incredible to work with- Thank you all! 🩵🩷 - - - - #monsterhunter #mhworld #mhwiceborne #nergigante #dragon #rookerydraws #teostra #lunastra

An image with a border featuring various Elder Dragons from Monster Hunter World. At the top is Teostra facing to the left, a reddish purple lion-like dragon with thick fur on its neck and tail. Facing him is Lunastra, similar in appearance but blue and with larger, rounder horns. She is facing the right. On the left side of the border is a lush green forest, we see it as a top down view, and Kushala Daora walking through it. Its a grey dragon, with a metallic tinge. At the bottom is another dragon, Zorah Magdaros. It has a volcanic mountain on its back, with various glowing holes. Two waves of water crash away from it. To the right on the border is Vaal Hazak, a fleshy dragon with glowing yellow eyes, and tendrils of flesh draped on it. Its wings are torn up, like muscle. It is walking away from top of the border, where a dead Legiana lays atop decomposing corpses. This is the Rotten Vale, where all things go to die.
Central to the piece is Nergigante, a dark grey dragon with thick cream horns, and smaller cream spikes protruding from the base of the horns. It has sharp scales along the top of its head, and teeth that protrude from onto of its mouth, like the teeth make up the shape. It is holding up a huge pair of paws adorned with huge cream claws, and it looks ready to attack.

Digital illustration Monster Hunter illustration of a hunter fishing up a large King Marlin (a creature resembling a swordfish with a more pronounce sail) from a rocky coast. She is a large and bulky older woman with grey hair, myriad scars, tan skin, and is wearing stylish sunglasses on her forehead. Behind her, a Lagiacrus (a large leviathan that with spiky blue scales, a cream underbelly, and orange horns) rises out of of the ocean as it snaps up another King Marlin in its powerful jaws, its head rising towards a bright sun. Despite the creature's intimidating appearance, the hunter is smiling with fond acknowledgement, realizing the commonality between her and the monster she shares the world with.

I am Enkou, the designer of Malphasie from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius! It is a shame that the game will be sunsetting at the end of this month, but my memories of it will always be precious. 🖤 #malphasie #finalfantasybraveexvius #finalfantasy #conceptdesign

Concept art sketch page of Malphasie from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. She is a woman with long black-and-grey ombre hair, which form into wings. She is wearing a black feathery dress with a red sash. Beads hang off the skirt. She has a shawl with a red pompom on the front. She is wearing a raven-shaped talisman necklace. Her legs and wrists are wrapped in white bandages. The sketches show her attack animations where she summons crow-like beings to fight for her.

Artwork of Malphasie. One of her hands and one of her legs are dismembered from her body in a surreal manner, as her crows fly around her in a gust of rushing wind. The crow in the front has some of her wrapping bandages in its beak.

Artwork of Malphasie. She is floating with her black-grey ombre hair-wings. She's holding out her talisman in her outreached hands. Behind her is the silhouette of a giant crow with a glowing red eye.

Official artwork of Malphasie created by the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius design team. Energy is forming around one of her fists as she appears ready to throw a punch. Her crows fly around her with feathers falling.
