An illustration serving as an identification guide, showing a pastoral scene with numerous plants and insects captured in one. The plants and small creatures are labelled with small text under the drawings which somehow does not detract from the overall appeal of the illustration.

This incredible 3,400-year-old wig is made from locks of human hair! It belonged to an ancient Egyptian woman named Merit. Styled with ringlets and braids, it’s astonishingly well preserved and offers a remarkable glimpse into the hairstyles of her time! Museo Egizio, Turin. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a well-preserved ancient Egyptian wig crafted from locks of dark brown human hair. The locks were sewn together and braided. The hair is parted in the middle and curled into ringlets that end with braids on either side of the face and on the back of the neck. Dimensions 30 cm x 45 cm. Dated c. 1425-1353 BC. This type of hairstyle was often decorated with flowers and diadems, which were very fashionable in the mid-18th dynasty, as can be seen in paintings and statues of the period.

The wig belonged to a high-ranking woman called Merit. She was the wife of Kha, the chief of works who supervised the royal tomb construction workers. The intact tomb of Kha and Merit (TT8) was discovered in 1906 by Italian archaeologist Ernesto Schiaparelli in the Theban Necropolis at the royal tomb workers’ village of Deir-el-Medina. The wig is on display at the Museo Egizio (Egyptian Museum) in Turin.

Sipping my coffee ☕️ and thinking about these marvellous Minoan cups! They look so modern it’s incredible to think they were made by Bronze Age potters some 3,800 years ago! Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo collage shows five cylindrical Minoan cups each with a single handle and a slightly flaring rim. Each cup is decorated with a different geometric polychrome motif as follows:

Top left: on a black background, a central band delineated by an upper and lower white line contains evenly-spaced dark-orange circles. Each orange circle is outlined by a white line. Above and below the central band are swirling white vine-like lines.

Top right: on a black background, a large white spiral on the front of the cup and beside it a dark-orange oval with stylised white petals at each end which looks like a wrapped sweet!

Middle left: a central band of white and dark orange diagonal lines runs around the cup. Above and below the central band are alternating black and white diagonal shapes, the black ones look like shark fins

Bottom left: a central reddish-orange band delineated with a white line. Above the central band are swirling, spiralling white lines against a black background, and below the central band are alternating white and black diagonal lines.

Bottom right: A central band delineated with white lines contains white 's'-shaped diagonal white stripes. Above the central band a row of red dots outlined with white circles. Below the central band a single white line on the black background.

This type of Minoan pottery is known as Kamares Ware, named after the Kamares Cave on Mount Ida on the Greek island of Crete where this kind of pottery was first discovered. Kamares Ware vessels were luxury items produced by palace workshops at Phaistos and Knossos on Crete. These five cups were excavated at Phaistos and are dated 1800-1700 BC.

When Lord #Elgin stripped the Treasury of #Atreus at #Mycenae in 1802, he left its monumental entrance a bare, undecorated skeleton. We look at these fragments today and forget they were once part of a dazzling Late Bronze Age façade. #ReliefWednesday #AncientBluesky 🏺
STONE RELIEF FRAGMENTS FROM THE TREASURY OF ATREUS, C13 BCE

Here we see three carved stone fragments from the Treasury of Atreus. The top and bottom pieces feature running spirals above roundels, while the middle rosso antico fragment shows opposed half-rosettes separated by a vertically banded triglyph. The lowest piece is carved from greyish-green limestone. The deep carved centres of the spirals were originally drilled to hold bright blue glass inlays. Despite its name, this was a royal tholos tomb, not a treasury. The long approach and towering façade were accessible stages for public funerary rituals. The lavish decoration served as dynastic propaganda, overawing subjects and rivals with imperial power. While such conspicuous wealth was an open invitation to theft (it was heavily looted in antiquity), the immediate political need to project dominance outweighed the risk of desecration.

🔸 Late Attic-Geometric IIA pitcher/oinochoe with round mouth and bands of geometric motifs, 735–720 BCE. AN1965.142

The motifs may actually have derived from textile patterns at the time. This particular pitcher was made in Athens sometime during 8th century BCE and given its preservation, it was likely discovered in a tomb alongside other funerary gifts.

The famous Hindsgavl Dagger, found by a young boy out walking with his mum on the Danish island of Fænø! A masterpiece of flint knapping from Late Neolithic Denmark, c. 1900-1700 BC. 📷 National Museum of Denmark #FindsFriday #Archaeology
A photo of the so-called Hindsgavl Dagger by Arnold Mikkelsen for the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. It is knapped from flint which appears a burnt orange colour in the photo, displayed against a black background. The Hindsgavl Dagger is a type of late Neolithic flint blade known as a ‘fishtail’ dagger. It has a leaf-shaped body and a distinctive fishtail-shaped hilt. There is zig-zag knapping on the hilt which is said to mimic the stitched seam on leather handles of bronze daggers. The blade is less than 1 cm thick. The Hindsgavl Dagger is famous in Denmark and features on the Danish 100 Krone bank note. Dimensions: 29.5 cm in length.

Timeless art from Minoan Crete! Some 3,500 years ago, a Minoan sculptor transformed a piece of ivory into this dynamic and graceful figurine of a bull leaper! From Knossos Palace. Heraklion Archaeological Museum 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a small ivory figurine representing a male bull-leaper about to execute a mid-air somersault over a bull’s back. The figurine is balancing on straight arms above which a slim body forms a graceful arch, and legs (one missing), thrust up high into the air, slightly bent at the knees. The pose is somewhat reminiscent of that of a diver, except for the head which is raised and faces forwards rather than tucked between the arms. The figurine measures 28.7 cm. The ivory is now a warm creamy yellow, mottled with brown staining and fine cracks. It is displayed on a modern metal support structure in Heraklion Archaeological Museum, Crete.

According to the museum ‘It is part of the only three-dimensional depiction of bull-leaping from the Palace of Knossos known to date. It was found together with at least two other ivory figurines and a faience bull’s head. The composition obviously depicts the moment when the athlete leaps over the bull, a scene familiar from Minoan frescoes and seals’

It goes on to say ‘the examination of the group under the microscope showed that the figures preserve traces of red paint, meaning that some features were painted on. They also had long hair made of copper gilt wires attached to the head, while thin pieces of gold foil found together with the statuettes may have been part of their clothing’

Wow, these ancient Egyptian linen tunics are 3,400 years-old! They belonged to Kha, who was the ‘director of works’ responsible for the design and construction of royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. 📷 Museo Egizio, Turin collezioni.museoegizio.it/en-GB/materi... #Archaeology
The museum image shows a display of ancient Egyptian linen clothing and a small painted wooden storage chest from the tomb of the ancient Egyptian architect Kha. Two large, rectangular linen tunics with keyhole-shaped neck openings are both shown hanging from display mounts. The tunic on the left is plain woven cream linen with a fringed hem. The tunic on the right has multi-coloured bands around the neckline and down the sides. Dimensions: circa 115 cm x 123.5 cm Between them is a painted wooden chest, shown open and filled with folded linen garments. The chest lid rests on the floor in front of the box and is painted with repeating geometric rosette motifs. At the lower right is a pile of folded linen textiles. The objects date to Egypt’s 18th Dynasty (1425–1353 BC) and come from the intact tomb of Kha and his wife Merit, now in the Egyptian Museum of Turin.
