This isn't a rant with a purpose, I don't have some larger thesis here, except that I think this speaks again to both 1) the real demand for this kind of historical content and 2) the failure of trained historians to deliver it, leading to 3) efforts by enthusiastic but untrained amateurs to do so.

So long as we - as a field - regard producing a historical argument that thousands of people can read as somehow 'lesser' than producing a historical argument that only dozens of people will read, we're going to continue to struggle to maintain ourselves.

This is a HUGE, 9ft-tall statue of a Greek king of Egypt in the Ptolemaic period. Found in the Karnak Temple in Thebes, the Egyptian museum in Cairo dates this REALLY early, to the reign of Alexander IV (c. 317–310 BCE)! #Egypt #Greek #ancient

This Scythian gold pectoral is from Tovsta Mohyla, Ukraine. There is spectacular detail like delicate filigree & realistic animals. The top row shows domestic activities (suckling, milking), the bottom row violence (griffins attack horses, a lion a boar). 🕰️C4thBC 🏛️📷Museum of Historical Treasures 🇺🇦

Yeah, I would characterize the most vocal student reaction I get to teaching the Fall of the Roman Republic as a kind of mounting dread for contemporary American politics. I don't even ever draw explicit parallels. The students have no problem spotting the similarities.
