Last year there was over $200 billion in climate-disaster damages. Insurers paid out about $100 billion. That gap was paid by governments, businesses, and households. This is an important failure. - Sam Medlock #climateweeknyc #nycw2026

I’ve had MAGA people tell me that we as scientists are not open minded to alternative treatments (that have not been proven). I ask why they aren’t open to the large corpus of evidence that proves the opposite.

Dozens of gas-burning power plants are being built across the country, solely to power data centers. These plants could emit as much planet-warming pollution as half of all passenger vehicles in the entire country in a single YEAR. We need a data center moratorium — now.

I used to work in Barnes and Noble. Here I am at my local B&N. When I told a bookseller it was mine, she got on the loud speaker and said, “There is an author in the building!” Another staff member came over and they asked me to sign my books and congratulated me. Thanks, B&N!

Almost everything we argue about is a substitute for the thing we should be arguing about: the immense wealth & power of an oligarchic class, which captures governments, ruins lives and wrecks the living planet. This class redirects our rage at scapegoats. To resist its lies is to resist its power.

I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵

Today's Headline

And then one day, while I read aloud to my husband the news and felt the widening hole in my heart, he raised his hand to quiet me.
I followed his gaze out the window to see in the yard a small fluffy thing with black and white eyespots on its head.
A northern pygmy owl beside our door, stout body slightly smaller than my fist.
It turned its neck a full half circle to look at me with bright yellow eyes.
In an instant, I shifted from disgust with the world to awe. Awe for this fierce bespeckled miracle, this wonder of feather and beak and claw, this small being in the grass looking back at me as if to say, Here is also the news.
How surprising the world can be.
How quickly, when I let it, amazement overwrites my fear and makes of the hole in my heart a home.

Another 7x7 poem (seven lines, seven syllables per line.) This one inspired by endings—of seasons, of eras. Marcescence Sometimes we hold on too hard; cling to what should be released— old, winter-worn, transparent from time and weather, rattled, beaten, tattered— it's hard to let the familiar fall away, let new growth emerge Note: Marcescence is a botanical term that refers to trees that retain withered leaves over the winter.

There's a simple means of telling whether someone can be trusted: when they get something wrong, do they admit it? A consistent feature of Trump and the Maga crowd, of Farage, Truss, Johnson, Le Pen, Weidel and their counterparts around the world is that they do not admit to getting things wrong.

“There Will Come Soft Rains (War Time)” by Sara Teasdale (1884 – 1933) poets.org/poem/there-w... #TodaysPoem #NationalPoetryMonth #Spring #poem #poetry
Poem text:

There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,

Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

To be led by a coward

To be led by a thief

The Trees

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too.
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

In May, 2025, the first session of Climate Meditation & Writing Workshop was held at Studio Kroner in downtown Cincinnati.
