I’ve been off my music-listening game recently, but I did manage to listen to the new Joy Oladokun. I need to hear it again, but as always, her music is honest, insightful and deeply-felt.

I’ve worn these shoes in half a dozen countries and in all seasons and weather. I’ve worn them to professional conferences and on farms. I’ve re-glued the soles, replaced the laces and added arch support. I hope they outlast another ten years.

I spent the last of my Canadian cash at the airport today, getting my ten-year-old Docs polished at a shoeshine stand. Well worth it! They don’t exactly look new, but they look a lot fresher than they did before!

Vancouver’s downtown area, lit up, is really beautiful.
The skyline of part of downtown Vancouver near the Westin Bayshore hotel. Many tall glass buildings have individual square windows lit up against a dark blue sky, with water and boats visible on the left side.

Vancouver was just astonishingly pretty today.

Riding the ferry. (I asked a stranger to take my picture and it turned out he’s a professional photographer. I don’t like many pictures of myself, but I like this one.)

I went mushroom foraging yesterday, with a professional guide. We didn’t find all that many edible mushrooms, but it was really fun to learn about a few and explore the temperate rainforest.
Maritime forest with tall trees creating a cainomy and many fallen trees on beds of green moss. A figure with a long beard wearing layers and a raincoat speaks to a group whose heats are just visible. A hand with grey fingernails holds a large yellow/orange chanterelle mushroom. Tall red-toned straight tree trunks with bright green leaves and needles at the time. Bright green moss on the ground.Large mushrooms growing on a fallen log on a bed of green ferns.

“…you really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be…But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won't be the same person who walked in.” Haruki Haruki Murakami from Kafka on the Shore:
Sometimes fate is like a small sandstorm that keeps changing directions. You change direction but the sandstorm chases you. You turn again, but the storm adjusts. Over and over you play this out, like some ominous dance with death just before dawn. Why? Because this storm isn't something that blew in from far away, something that has nothing to do with you. This storm is you. Something inside of you.
So all you can do is give in to it, step right inside the storm, closing your eyes and plugging up your ears so the sand doesn't get in, and walk through it, step by step. There's no sun there, no moon, no direction, no sense of time. Just fine white sand swirling up into the sky like pulverized bones. That's the kind of sandstorm you need to imagine. And you really will have to make it through that violent, metaphysical, symbolic storm. No matter how metaphysical or symbolic it might be, make no mistake about it: it will cut through flesh like a thousand razor blades. People will bleed there, and you will bleed too. Hot, red blood. You'll catch that blood in your hands, your own blood and the blood of others. And once the storm is over you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm you won't be the same person who walked in.
That's what this storm's all about.

I don’t like all mainstream pop misic- a lot of it is insipid and uninteresting, but I am a sucker for good hooks and catchy lyrics. What I’m saying is that this Carly Rae Jepsen album isn’t brilliant, and there are way too many tracks, but I’m kind of into it.

The Quiet Tilt

The horizon loosens its fist
and spills a thin gold rumor
across the quiet stones.
Last night’s shadows,
those archivists of what was,
fold themselves back into the soil.
A single beam slips in,
soft as a new idea,
and the world tilts..
not loudly,
but with the hush of a page
turning itself.
And you,
still half‑stitched to yesterday,
feel the light rearrange your edges
until you fit the moment
that wasn’t possible
five breaths ago.
Nothing announces the shift.
It simply happens..
the way morning happens,
quietly rewriting everything
that thought it was permanent.
