Personally, I can’t get over how little time elapsed between his crime and the start of his career. Geller isn’t a complex case for me. I’m not even sure I disagree with a hardline “no predators in the arts” stance. But I don’t agree that you can have that stance and believe in redemption

Also, I do think making art and putting it into the world are pretty basic rights. I’m not saying I’m sure predators should have those rights, but I think a “redemption” that involves losing them is not a real redemption. So let’s be frank, either in our wrath or in our uncertainty

For one thing, fields like accounting and admin are not comfortable little silos for people we don’t want to think about. They are places where basically any success at all will soon mean being given institutional power over other people. Why would we be happier to put predators in those positions?

I’m upset about Jacob Geller. I would almost certainly never work with him after these revelations and I probably won’t ever watch his videos again. I feel the same anger that drives these posts, and I’m not trying to dunk. But I’m not sure I agree with what they actually say. I want to explore that

here's the thing: the question of "can someone redeem themselves after committing sexual assault" is completely separate from the question of "should that person have a career making YouTube videos."

they can be an accountant. they can go into admin work. they can go work on a farm. they are not barred from making a living. they just don't have a basic human right to make money filming themselves talking about video games.

I would guess they account for the possibility of undercooking by trimming/slicing it freshly before serving (which would make it basically safe to eat raw)

I get why they’re often not so charitable about some of it bc it really does take a while for a lot of what it’s doing to become clear. That said, one reviewer on here drove me crazy trying to paint the first book as ableist and misogynistic for very flimsy reasons. That person was just being dumb

They will always be kind of poppy and silly, and they take so long to improve that I don’t think anyone who doesn’t enjoy it at first should continue, but they really do become way more emotionally and politically mature

“You can’t save them all” becomes like a mantra, but it’s one that must at times be grudgingly embraced just to survive the day and at other times be rejected in favor of searching for more radical possibilities. It explores the tension between facing the horrors and trying not to drown in them

I know it’s probably pointless to stick up for these books but while yes they do start off trashy/disposable and the scale of atrocity they show can at times clash with the tone, the later books do become extremely explicitly concerned with exactly this

It’s such a shame to need the “correct” take on that dynamic so badly you miss both the harrowing evocation of less-recognized forms of abuse and the Greek tragedy/EC comics poetry of the Nice Guy dooming himself to suffer the kind of emotional abuse he might otherwise perpetrate without realizing

I fumed when she addressed how Bear’s experience is like being a victim of abuse—only to write it off as “victims can look like abusers from the outside.” That crushes so much richness and nuance, and ignores that Nikki is two characters, one of whom is doing a lot more than reacting to abuse.

Looking into it it seems like people just need a Windows machine on hand when it’s time to export but that Mac works fine for the whole first 99% of the creative process. Don’t let your art be something you’re always planning to do later! I let way too many years go by that way
