There has long been a tradition, Goro says, of fans making amateur art derived from their favorite manga, anime or video game characters. So the Ghiblification craze didn’t seem like a big deal. For amusement, one of the company’s executives even dabbled in the trend himself. “We didn’t think much of it, to be honest,” Goro says. “If someone started making a lot of money out of it, then it would be a problem.”

Anyone positioning Ghibli in the vanguard of the AI backlash, Goro says, was twisting events for their own purposes; the studio itself was essentially AI agnostic. If the late co-founder Isao Takahata were still alive (he died in 2018), Goro says, he’d probably be first in line to give it a whirl. “He was someone who was very interested in the latest technology,” he says. “We’re not denying, or feeling negative, about AI technology itself.”
