Plenty of countries in history have experimented with importing a foreign labor class. The West is the first and only civilization to import a foreign labor class that is granted full political rights, including welfare & the right to vote. All visas are a bridge to citizenship.

In amongst all the excitement I fear many have missed this outstanding bit of trolling by Friedrich Merz. The Chancellor gifted Trump a gilded framed copy of his grandfather’s German birth certificate... reminding Americans that Trump is both the child and grandchild of migrants.

It's a sh--ty time to be a young #scientist in the US. (From a 02 Apr 2025 #reddit post) #edusky #cancer #research 🧪

Screenshot of a post to r/labrats that reads:

Just found out my postdoc got terminated

No sorries. No warm wishes. Just a straight to the point email from the NIH that my funding (which also funds hundreds of other postdocs nationwide) has been cut. Now we are all going to compete against each other and every other PhD who lost funding for every single faculty position that exists (if there any left) and every single biotech openings (if those even exist as well). Hell, we are more realistically going to be competing for the part-time lecturing positions for summer school at our Unis because we all need to pay rent somehow...

I really thought I was in the clear. I felt terrible about seeing all the other posts about people losing their positions but I always thought there was no way it was going to happen to me. And then it did...

This is actually insane.

To all the undergrads and grad students that are pursuing academia or thinking about pursuing academia. I truly am sorry. These are insane times. I cannot even describe the anger I am feeling right now. They literally are throwing us to the streets.

EDIT: oh forgot to mention my research is on cancer... the very thing they claim they aren't cutting

When cruel government officials grab people up because they don't agree with current leaders (Trump, Musk), that is kidnapping. And any of us may be next. Call your members of Congress and ask that they get off their duffs.

A smartphone photo of a projected PowerPoint slide with the presenter standing in front of it. The slide is titled "Undergraduate Headcount Enrollment." Under the title is a table of five years of enrollment data for three colleges. The numbers in all three rows decrease each year, with no exceptions. In 2025 (less than 30 days away), PayPal will start selling your transaction history for targeted advertising. I very highly recommend logging into your account and going to Settings > Data & Privacy > Personalized Shopping. If you're reading this, turn that off RIGHT NOW before you forget.

A screenshot of PayPal's terms of service. Big wall of legalese text, which I will be pasting in below. You don't need to read it, here's the important part:

"The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop."

Here's the whole paragraph:

We are updating our Privacy Statement to explain how, starting early Summer 2025, we will share information to help improve your shopping experience and make it more personalized for you. The key update to the Privacy Statement explains how we will share information with merchants to personalize your shopping experience and recommend our services to you. Personal information we disclose includes, for example, products, preferences, sizes, and styles we think you’ll like. Information gathered about you after the effective date of our updated Privacy Statement, November 27, 2024, will be shared with participating stores where you shop, unless you live in California, North Dakota, or Vermont. For PayPal customers in California, North Dakota, or Vermont, we’ll only share your information with those merchants if you tell us to do so. No matter where you live, you’ll always be able to exercise your right to opt out of this data sharing by updating your preference settings in your account under “Data and Privacy.”
