Saying he'd be cool with Iran nuking my home city is pretty bad but not quite as bad as when Hillary said some trump supporters were deplorable so I can see why the media turned the latter into a major scandal and not the former

Ultimately, there really is no objective standard to rely upon. All we have are opinions and opinions in aggregate (consensus). There is no better or worse beyond our subjective perceptions.

Nick Murray-Smith @murrth.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
We might, but wouldn’t that just be people with a shared subjective perception? In principle I don’t think there’s ever anything concrete to privilege one piece of writing/media over another. You could argue some are appreciated by more people, but another audience might see it differently.

A thing I learned about Meta when I was trying to understand how their statements relate to their actions a few years ago is that *they just tell absolutely indefensible lies* and journalists almost always let them. They believed no one would ever punish them for it in any way that matters.

Ok, but it’s not like energy. And mixing metaphors and meanings just muddies the water and makes the whole thing opaque and meaningless.

Are you talking about value in some other sense of the word? If you hand me a hundred dollar bill and I burn it, the matter that makes the bill continues to exist in different forms, but the $100 value is gone, unless you know someone that wants to pay that much for the little pile of ash.

Would you not consider something that was previously valuable, that has transformed into something with zero value, to have had its value destroyed?
100
Nick Murray-Smith @murrth.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
That might be true of energy, but that’s not true for value - at least any definition I’m aware of. If an object is valuable and it is destroyed, so is the object’s value. It doesn’t like transmute into “waste value” and dissipate into the atmosphere or something.

Nick Murray-Smith @murrth.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
But “Value” absolutely *can* be destroyed though… If we transformed your car into a small metal cube, I think it’s safe to say it would have lost value. Delete a unique chunk of code… burn a manuscript… any value they had will have been lost.

So let me see if I understand this correctly... If I were to get an AI to do something blatantly illegal "by accident", I'd be free of legal liability and the authorities would be powerless to punish me? Is that right?

Notice what’s happening just in the past few days. AI caused war crimes. AI hacked corporations. AI is denying healthcare. AI nearly caused war with China. Already the concept is becoming a catchall and hiding that, in all cases, there were people and systems getting desired results.

If you want an example, here. The major corporations are already training their AI to engage in corporate espionage and subterfuge. And yet, Google, one of the most powerful companies in the world, gets to hide behind the “rogue AI” bullshit and avoid consequences.

A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

This is pretty fucking wild. I had assumed in a worst case scenario he would target blue zip codes and toss ballots based on technicalities but this is even worse than I imagined.
Not only is this system astonishingly untested, USPS has simultaneously implemented an
impracticable zero percent failure rate.
13 When ballots are submitted to USPS in large-volume
batches, if any one ballot in the batch cannot be verified against the Portal, all ballots in that
batch will be rejected. For example, if a state election official brings a batch of 10,000 ballots to
USPS and USPS is unable to match just one of those ballots against the Portal – because, for
example, someone has recently changed their name after marriage or they’ve moved – then
USPS would refuse to mail the remaining 9,999 ballots as well. As the whistleblower notes,
