In fact one of the first pieces I ever read about this wasn’t even from Trace, it was from Gary Leff who runs a pretty anodyne blog about aviation and travel called View From The Wing. He expressly also discussed how this wasn’t One True Cause of planes falling out of the sky.

Well that's sort of my point. It's a beautiful place to visit, tons of things for a tourist to do. Or a retiree. But for an immigrant? Wages are low and work isn't easy to find even for locals. Which is why it's hemorrhaging population, incidentally, unlike other low-cost-of-living states.

The ground creates resistance that turns some of the electricity into waste heat. This is the case even with pylons, the conductors have to trade places every few miles, otherwise the one closest to the ground would experience more resistance that the rest.
