you can disagree with this because of Vibes if you want. you can also look at voting history and see that Kagan has been on the right side of the (few) antitrust cases she's participated in on the Court, plus the major 2024 bribery case. she was obviously wrong to join McDonnell though (in 2015)

nor is there any reason to think this action was taken out of class solidarity or fascism or corruption

i'm not a "both parties are the same" person, that's obviously not true, but it is true that everyone in the federal government exercises class solidarity with each other to some degree, and for SCOTUS that degree is something in the neighborhood of 99%

isn't the primary outcome of this stuff to reduce human agency? like, the whole thing is outsourcing your thinking and action to a bot? bots that are famously called "agents"?

There's this understated "of course no one who cares about individual or collective privacy even a little bit should ever use this product for any reason" subtext to a lot of launch-adjacent Meta product coverage that gives way to blasé "7/10 because the battery life could be better" gadgetisms

recently argued with someone I'm close with who is also a Chief of Staff to a member of Congress. core argument was he thinks it's appropriate for Dems to create or allow clearly unethical policy if it improves their chances of winning the next election. it really depressed me and I can't shake it

I’ve resisted calling ICE arrests/detention “disappearances.” But now ICE’s apparent policy is that in some cases, you might not even know if your loved one is still in the US. IDK what else to call that. documentedny.com/2026/10/02/i...

The Throughline: Is ICE “Disappearing” Detainees?
ICE is deliberately withholding the locations of some detainees from lawyers and loved ones. At what point does that amount to “disappearing” them?

good example of the "legally present" vs. "lawful status" distinction. she's allowed to be here but is also deportable whenever ICE finds a country who will take her. US immigration law is fundamentally cruel
Traore is in the United States legally on a 2011 “withholding of removal” order, which grants recipients legal protection from deportation to a country where they face harm or torture. She has no criminal history.

The death penalty is a moral abomination. State-sanctioned barbarism pushed by incompetent morons and sanctioned by the Supreme Court. Absolute ghoul shit. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...
The lone woman on Tennessee's death row was still alive after she was administered two lethal injections, her lawyer said in a motion seeking to halt her execution Wednesday night, a stunning development after the Supreme Court had stepped in to allow the state to put her to death.
At 8:26 p.m. local time, witnesses said
"executioners had injected both syringes of lethal injection chemicals and Pike is still alive and snoring," her lawyers said in a federal court filing.
They said Pike "has not lost consciousness and still has a heartbeat," and that curtains to the death chamber "have gone down twice."

key to family separation running under the radar is that it isn't a Big Policy anymore. it's just the deportation machine quietly working as intended
Also different: The separations of the first Trump administration were the result of a distinct policy (“Zero Tolerance”) that, once brought to light, could be challenged in federal court. Today, family separations appear to be incidental—the consequence of a ruthless effort to hit a quota, no matter the cost. And this time, people with firsthand knowledge of separations are keeping quiet. Many temporary caregivers are undocumented themselves or have relatives who are; they worry that drawing attention would put their own families at risk. Government and nonprofit workers are also scared to speak up. The White House has attacked organizations that oppose its goals by cutting funding, launching dubious criminal investigations, and issuing retaliatory executive orders.

I continue to think that most people not steeped in this stuff are missing the important point this attorney made. ICE and CBP do a lot of heinous, unethical shit, and pretty much all of it is legal. The laws governing immigration enforcement are so excessively permissive it's hard to break the law
The ACLU is suing to stop ICE's use of Guantanamo for immigration detainees, but that suit is still pending. Twin Cities immigration attorney Marc Prokosch, who represented Abdullah and three of the other Somali men held at Guantanamo, said in an interview Friday that because the detainees had deportation orders to their nation of origin, ICE's actions do not appear to run afoul of federal law.

"We can all debate the morality and the ethics of it, but legally, it seems like it was solid," Prokosch said.

Chimpanzees, Bees, and Borders: Understanding Migration Through Evolution

January 16, 2026

When people talk about migration, borders, and xenophobia, the conversation usually gets heated very fast. It becomes deeply personal. People argue about all sorts of things. But what if part of the reason these debates are so intense has less to do with policy and more to do with human nature? Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist, offers an interesting metaphor that

may help explain why we react so strongly to outsiders.
