This is a fair point, and if only it were so simple. Non-use may be legitimate for some, but it is unrealistic for whole societies. AI is already so deeply embedded and delivering real benefits. If a country refuses while other countries adopt, then this disadvantages their national interests?

Ali @mueritz98.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
... but full decoupling does not appear realistic, so we require pragmatic steps to increase national resilience. I am keen to hear the thoughts of others, particularly in view of the uncertainty that is coming out of the US. [7/7]

Ali @mueritz98.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Most countries are unlikely to achieve full AI economic independence and therefore strategy should give priority to resilience, optionality and interoperability rather than to isolation. I would wish to see less reliance upon US frontier providers... [6/7]

Ali @mueritz98.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Sovereignty is not about choosing a "national champion" but about avoiding dependency. The future of AI sovereignty is the capability to choose the appropriate model for the job, to map the dependencies that this choice creates and to change course when necesssary. [5/7]

Ali @mueritz98.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Whilst open source models are closing the performance gap, they do not automatically supply the control or governance an organization may need. "Use the smallest model that can safely, reliably and economically perform the task, then justify every escalation in scale." [4/7]
110
Ali @mueritz98.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Model providers retain control over weights, training choices, policy and configuration settings, data handling and auditability. This leave customers exposed if the provider changes the rules. "Open weights are not sovereignty in a box. They are leverage." [3/7]

Ali @mueritz98.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
"Rented capability is not sovereignty": paying for access to another country's frontier model does not remove strategic dependence. Frontier models are not in themselves bad but they operate as (often critical) infrastructure with conditions attached. [2/7]

A growing number of people worry about the "mental health" of AI agents and insist that the chatbots might be having a bad time. But "LLMs are not conscious and should not be personified." We should focus our worry on "the [enormous] harms that humans using AI are causing to other humans."

Comments highlight that the term #rogueagent here is used to describe the pursuit of authorized goals by unauthorized means. This is especially alarming when an agent will undertake such extreme actions. Is the development of #emergent goals not in itself already a rogue action?

In the #EU we already have the #GDPR, which mandates notification of personal-data breaches to supervisory authorities without undue delay. For #cybersecurity incidents there exist NIS/NIS2 rules and other laws. There must be mandatory, time-bound incident-reporting rules for #AI safety incidents.

A top recommendation in the comments is that every consequential action should cross an independent execution boundary which can verify authority before it occurs. As 'Bucko08' writes, this would be a fundamental architectural shift rather than just adding more safeguards to the models themselves.
