Happy #caturday from two silly boys who are pretending they weren’t just bathing each other.

I always hesitate to mention 9/11 for many reasons, but I do vividly remember where I was when I heard about it. Driving into work that day I wasn't really listening to the news on the radio even through I had it on. It wasn't until I parked and a friend contacted me that I really started listening.

You may have heard about the star S301 that divebombs the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way. Have you wondered what the sky would look like from that star? I did. Then I did the math and physics to find out, so you don't have to. www.scientificamerican.com/article/this... 🔭🧪

The image is of a four panel comic.
The title is “Cats living together”.
The first panel shows a black cat and orange cat cuddling with their eyes closed. The orange cat says “I love you”. The black cat says “I love you too”.
The second panel zooms in on them.
The third panel shows the orange cat opening its eyes.
The fourth panel shows the orange cat raising its paw to punch the black cat. It says, “Actually you know what”.

I’d like to make it clear for all the people following me what the sheer gravity of the news is. Without this facility we can’t ensure constant communication with spacecraft beyond Earth orbit. If this facility is off-line, the Artemis program cannot send a crew to the Moon.

One of the things that, as lead writer, I had to bang into the head of senior leadership sometimes was that writers were not interchangeable even within a project. One writer knew a certain companion inside and out. When we lost that writer, a new writer coming in took twice as long to do the work.

I never used the em dash much until I wrote a book and went through editing pre-AI. Becoming consistent with using it really helped clean up my writing. Unfortunate that a good writing habit is now seen as a sign of AI use.

This morning I'm in the bathroom and older cat comes tearing around the corer and through the room at full speed, younger cat *hot* on his heels. He stops dead in the closet on the other side, and I can practically see the gears turning in that second as he realizes he's about to be cornered.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the shifting baseline concept as applied to everyday life. People in their 20’s now have no memory of highly functional systems, products (from blenders to sweaters) that were so well made you could hand them down across generations, or even helpful customer service.

I will say this again: Science isn’t just something that nerds do, it’s the foundation of the modern world. It’s why this app exists. It’s why child mortality rate isn’t 50% anymore. It’s how we’re able to launch people to the moon. It’s how we’re able to grow food that feeds half the world.

Apollo 10 did not have a toilet. (None did) Hilarity ensued. (There's audio of this if you're so inclined)
Photo of an old print out from NASA that reads

And what's happening is-

CDR: Oh Who did it?

CMP: Who did what?

IMP: What?

CDR: Who did it? (Laughter)

IMP: Where did that come from?

CDR: Give me a napkin quick. There's a turd floating through the air.

Plus the word CONFIDENTIAL which is crossed outPhoto of an old print out

CMP: I didn't do it. It ain't one of mine.

IMP: I don't think it's one of mine.

CDR: Mine was a little more sticky than that. Throw that away.

CMP: God almighty.

(Laughter)

CDR: What do you see?

CMP: Nothing, that's enough for me.

IMP: Yes.

NASA: Nice going there.

A nation's wealth is in its CHEESE. Pres. Jimmy Carter established govt. cheese program to shelter dairy producers from perils of over-production, storing excesses as a standardized 'loaf' of American cheese. This necessitated controlled environments for storage & so we needed a Cheesy Fort Knox.

Why does the U.S. government have 1.4 billion pounds of cheese stored in a cave underneath Springfield, Missouri?
The government has been storing away cheese for decades.
