I've made my views on this clear on numerous occasions but this specific one, I ask you to simply imagine how many great Vin Scully stories we would have lost because current-rules innings wouldn't have lasted long enough for him to tell them

In honor of Mr. Rogers’ birthday, here’s your regularly scheduled reminder that the quote of his you keep sharing, that in times of crisis we should look for the helpers, was for his audience of children. We’re adults now. We’re supposed to *be* the helpers.

The VA lost about 700 social workers and 500 psychologists and psychiatrists over the course of 2025 — a significant change for an agency that was adding mental health staffers nearly every month leading up to Trump’s return to office. Read more: propub.li/4rBUJOV
Bar chart showing the change in the number of providers — social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists — from the third quarter of 2023 to the end of 2025 on the x-axis and the number of providers from negative 400 to 800 on the y-axis. The trend starts with a peak of about 700 social workers and around 200 psychologists added in the third quarter of 2023, followed by a steady decline across all groups, dropping below zero by the first quarter of 2025 with social worker losses eventually dipping around 400.

Training to become a therapist is weird sometimes: in most professions, nearly bringing a 71-year-old male veteran to tears would be frowned upon, but this morning it was one of the most rewarding moments of my career?

Discworld QOTD, from Carpe Jugulum
“Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That’s what sin is.”

“It’s a lot more complicated than that - “

“No. It ain’t. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they’re getting worried that they won’t like the truth. People as things, that’s where it starts.”

“Oh, I’m sure there are worse crimes -“

“But they starts with thinking about people as things…”

So incredibly proud of the work @raymopt.bsky.social, @obrienemj.bsky.social, @faithstoneking.bsky.social, and the rest of LSU's Consortium for the Advancement of Suicide Prevention have done on campus and in our community for National Suicide Prevention Week/World Suicide Prevention Day.
Tips for Supporting Friends Who Are Thinking about Suicide

About 12% of young adults (almost 4,000 LSU students) have serious thoughts of suicide each year

What Can I Do?
- Break the silence. Start the conversation.
- If you're worried about your friend, you can ask if they are thinking about suicide
- Talk openly and directly about suicide
- Be warm, encouraging, supportive, and offer a listening ear
- Ask how you can support them; say, "I am here for you, how can I best support you?"

Who Can I Ask for Help?
- Did you know, you can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 (24/7) to talk to a counselor about suicide, and figure out how to help your friend?
- In an emergency, call 911

Discworld QOTD, from Men at Arms
The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars.

Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.

A federal officer cannot be “doxxed.” The public has a right to know who is operating in our government, especially if they have the power to imprison someone.

From @aaup.bsky.social, what to do if ICE is on your campus.
ICE On Your Campus
Questions to Ask Your Administration
1. What is campus policy with regard to working with federal immigration authorities?
2. Who should faculty contact in the event that they are approached by ICE agents?
3. What private/limited-access spaces can you make available where ICE agents cannot enter unless they have a valid warrant?
4. Are you planning to communicate with students, staff, and faculty about their privacy rights? These rights include the right to deny immigration officers entry to their homes (including dorms) unless officers have a judicial warrant, and the right to not respond to the questions or statements of an immigration officer who is seeking to enter their home without a judicial warrant.
5. Are you planning to communicate guidance that, if a federal immigration enforcement officer seeks to enter a limited-access area on campus, students and workers should ask the officer for their name, identification number, agency affiliation, and business card, and inform the officer that they are not obstructing their process but need to contact the campus legal counsel for assistance?
6. What campus authority should students contact if they are contacted by ICE?
What Chapter Leaders Can Do Now
1. Provide to faculty any campus plan or policy and any campus authority contact.
2. Create a list of immigration attorneys who can be contacted in case of emergencies day and night.
3. Distribute a family preparedness plan template to your members. Example: aaup.org/ILRC-plan
4. Conduct Know Your Rights sessions for your members; these do not have to be done by an attorney.
Recommendations for Organizing on Your Campus
Engage members via a petition, open letter, high-participation meeting, in-person demonstration, or other collective action to demand that your campus administrators:
1. Not comply with ICE to detain or deport students, faculty, or staff unless legally required to do so.
2. Ensure that noncitizens understand the difference between an …
