Definitely worthwhile checking out the mathemagic that @gelada.bsky.social achieves with a CNC machine. Good stuff!

Looking forward to seeing the progress. Ever since we published our work on 3D Chladni patterns at Bridges 2016, I really want to build a physical system to create those. One day, I'll do it.

New paper on (among other things) generating Cannon-Thurston maps from veering triangulations, joint work with Jason Manning and Saul Schleimer. arxiv.org/abs/2609.14598. We also made lots of pictures of these space-filling curves, available at math.okstate.edu/people/seger...

It took more than 3,000 emails, close to 80 hours of work, and turned further hairs white, but it is great to finally hold the printed proceedings from this year's Bridges #Mathart conference in hand! Kudos to Eve Torrence (managing editor), the other editors, and the authors!

Any mapping is necessarily a kind of flattening, distortions happen, information lost. "Not even the most expansive mapping can convey everything" or, to quote Alfred Korzybski, "the map is not the territory"
excerpt from a page in Unflattening - upper part shows the globe encircled (like the Daily Planet) with the letters Circumnavigation. this casts a shadow on a flat map - the mercator project of the globe. Discussion of the distortions that happen when you go from 3 dimensions to two - information lost and connections severed. Below this is a similar arrangement, an icosahedron instead of a globe, and then a map made by unfolding that icosahedron. This is Buckminster Fuller's dymaxion map. It preserves area in ways the mercator could not, and it also shows connections where the mercator showed divisions. That said, it's not super clear for how you travel across the globe...

3-panel SMBC comic update. A man wearing glasses stands at a podium, declaring: "at last we've overthrown the economists! From now on the nation's finances shall be run by mathematicians!" Shortly after, the same mathematician declares: "as of today, money will be denominated in complex numbers. The public's long wait for an algebraically closed currency is at an end!" The next panel shows a news article headline: "ECONOMY CRASHES - Nation's money accidentally rotated 90 degrees, now imaginary. Mathematicians (quoted): "calm down, absolute value unchanged."
