Kylo Ren looked different in death. He wore the same tarnished hauberk and thick black surcoat patterned with red thread, but the wounds she’d inflicted on him in life were gone, and his normally unruly hair was neat and pushed back from his face. In life he’d been a wreck, energy spent, bleeding, half-feral.
Rey was frozen on the spot. The shallow grey water of the first gate lapped at her heels. The bells in the bandolier at her chest vibrated with energy, and she had a compulsion to reach for them like an itch she couldn’t scratch. Kylo had done something to freeze her movement. The still air carried the unmistakeable iron tang of free magic.
Kylo’s head dipped. His gaze bore into hers.
‘You need a teacher,’ he said.
Rey didn’t disagree. It had been mere days since she’d left Ancelstierre, since the missing Abhorsen’s bells had been thrust into her hands, since she had discovered the scar on her head was a baptismal charter mark. Since she’d found out she was not the girl she’d thought she was.
She didn’t know how to use the bells anymore than she knew how to navigate death. In a way, it was a mercy she couldn’t move. If she tripped - if she fell - then the water would carry her away to somewhere she could never return from.
Ahead, the first gate open. Water splashed as a lesser dead passed through and ran, shedding sinew and fragments of bone, for the border. Kylo whistled, a low note that reverberated inside Rey’s head - her stuck legs wanted to move - and the dead thing writhed and crashed down.

How did he do it? How could he compel the dead without bells, without any kind of instrument or weapon?
And what kind of master would send him out to raise the dead with nothing more than his own voice?
‘I can show you,’ he said. ‘I can teach you.’
The river tugged at her feet. The bells hummed at her chest. She felt their vibration in her bones, slowly shaking her body loose, unsticking her arms and legs. One seemed louder than the others. The third bell - she couldn’t recall its name.
She didn’t need to be taught. She had instinct.
Instinct was all she’d ever had.
Her hand broke free of its invisible bonds and snatched the third bell free from its pouch in one smooth movement. Without thinking, without planning, she swung it in a wide arc. The bell pealed through the stillness like a thunderclap, ringing a bright, merry song.
Kylo snarled. His body jerked, twisting towards the gate. For a moment his glamour slipped and she saw him as he’d been in life, his surcoat stained at the waist with a dark bloom of blood from a crossbow bolt, his cheek split by the angry red furrow she’d carved with her sword, the corrupted charter mark on his forehead shadowing his face like a bruise. His lips pursed, trying to whistle, but the bell’s song had already captured him. The gate opened and he marched through it, water sloshing at his feet, sent back to the ninth gate where his master awaited him.
