From what he can see from where the veils slip, the hair of the Bride herself shines pure fire.

Presenting herself to stand at his left side, he sees that, indeed, he needs look down more than a foot to meet her gaze, held by his only for the barest of seconds before she shies away, her eyes of quicksilver hazel hitting the ground at their feet before he can guess at her thoughts. With a deliberate move, he moves his arm, the one closest to her, in such a way so that she may hold his elbow for them to proceed that one step further towards where the officiant is waiting. Pleased, he sees that she doesn't hesitate to take his arm, grasps it without second thought or flinching - though she must know of what lies beneath the thick black leather of his glove, must feel how that glove covers metal and plastic, rather than tlesh and bone. It's a small thing, but it's a test many before her have failed.

Not such a scared little mouse after all, he thinks, and this time, he doesn't try to hide his smile.

Candy Corn Kiss 💛🧡🤍 #clydephee #reyloween candy

Their first kiss tasted like candy corn.

Clyde didn’t even like the stuff. Strange waxy texture, sweet but in a sort of empty, disappointing way.

Not Ophelia though. She was sweet and full of life and probably the hidden meaning to the universe, and her mouth tasted like the candy corn she’d offered him and he’d eaten gladly because why would he ever want to turn down anything she might offer him.

(She was even dressed like one, in a big tri-coloured cone costume that fit over her head.)

She’d later found out from Mellie that Clyde didn’t like candy corn, though he would insist on buying a big bag for her every Halloween in the many years to come. One time a year when he could relive the taste of their first kiss.

So, my secret (admittedly early) autumn vibe is... brown bag purple plum pie. As long as there are purple (read prune) plums, and there still are, THAT is what we are doing. If I'm in a rush, it's the NYT plum torte. But the pie is the way. When it's all over, we move into tarte tatin territory.

“Now, my fine friends, I will need a brave volunteer from the audience.” The illusionist on stage made a show of looking around at the scattered raised hands amongst the crowd. Finally he seemed to settle on his choice.

“You there, ma’am. The lovely lady with the beautiful red hair. Miss Mellie, would you please escort tonight’s Disappearing Lady up to the stage?”

No matter that the lady’s hand hadn’t been raised.

The illusionist’s assistant made her way to a finely dressed couple sitting in the quality seats, cushioned and gated away from the rabble of the general crowd. She held out her hand to the woman, who took it despite the protestations of the sputtering, well-heeled man seated beside her.

Now if any in the crowd knew the identity of this man and his date, they would surely have cried foul. An inside job! This woman was only chosen to participate in the illusion because she was the betrothed of the circus’ main investor, one Hamlet Prince. And while that may be the case, neither Hamlet nor Ophelia, his fiancée, knew the truth behind this illusion.

And thus, the lady was brought to the stage, placed into an upright box, and made to disappear by the renowned illusionist Joe Bang—her disappearance coinciding with the arrival of federal agents who had been investigating the Prince family for multiple crimes.

And when she reappeared, it was in the arms of the Bang Brothers Circus’ knife-thrower, “Lucky Clyde Logan,” Ophelia’s true love.
