Economics nerd, music fan, recovering political junkie. Did some Army stuff long ago, so I should be nominated for SECDEF soon.

Sorry, folks, fair's closed - algae out front should have told ya...
John Candy as the security guard from National Lampoon's Vacation appears in front of a sign announcing that the Great American State Fair has been postponed.

Oddly, the Freedom 250 website has been misspelled FREEEDOM250 - not a Photoshop alteration, that was real

“We cannot let politically motivated people do procedurally defective work on our <insert academic discipline here> history.” Great quote here, useful in many, many ways.

Democrats are going to take the House. The margin may be smaller. It's a kick in the teeth but you have to go out and win elections, not ride waves.

Weird that you don't hear the "it will grow the deficit" or "we can't afford it" arguments around the Iran war, because I've been hearing those arguments about every *good* thing the US has tried to do for decades now. It's funny when money matters and when it doesn't.

We live in a time dominated by deeply unserious people making deeply unserious arguments in support of tragically serious results that serious people would have both avoided and known to avoid.

Alex Karp is using Palantir’s website to promote his white supremacist manifesto. This is the company selling surveillance tools to ICE. The moment a sane person is in power in this country, Palantir & the entire fascist-techbro collaborationist sphere must be dismantled.

🔥CPI surges on higher energy costs, with the largest monthly increase since the nearing the peak of the pandemic in June 2022. Gains were driven by a surge in energy cost. Fuel oil jumped 30.7% during the month, its faster pace since Feb 2000.

There's a hauntingly beautiful irony in these morons thinking that carefully crafted American hegemony was actually weak and woke, and they would be the ones who would do Power and Dominance properly, and immediately bringing everything crashing down

For people who still care about this sort of thing, here's James Madison writing from 1793 (6 years after the delegates in Philadelphia signed the Constitution) about why the power to make war was vested in the legislature. press-pubs.uchicago.edu/founders/doc...

Some of the best memories during my “lost years” were situations I found myself in that were similar to this. There was an odd comfort found in dive bars in strange cities, surrounded by strangers who would probably understand parts of your story better than friends and family.

New study affirms what all other studies show. Importers and consumers, not foreign exporters bore the brunt of tariffs. Spike in uncertainty in April 2025 during the tariff tantrum showed up as paralysis in hiring much of the year since then - a little more than 84% of all jobs for 2025

Americans Are the Ones Paying for Tariffs, Study Finds
New research contradicts President Trump’s claim that foreigners are footing the bill.

Data disruptions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is down ~ 30% on staffing incl leadership roles. That has left them scrambled post shutdown to try to do more w/less, inc key regional survey offices closed. That has meant that tough decisions on filling gaps in the data had to be made.

This article brought everything together for me in a way that was easy to understand, especially for anyone who lived through, researched, and understood what happened in the financial meltdown of the 2000s.

"Individual liberty substantially outweighs the government's weak assertions of administrative and logistical costs." ww3.ca2.uscourts.gov/decisions/is...
For its part, the government does not contest the district court’s findings
that Mahdawi is neither a danger to the public nor a flight risk. Instead, it claims
irreparable harm from the “practical cost[]” of “creat[ing] an ad-hoc location for
Mahdawi to continue to appear for his removal proceedings in Louisiana
remotely.” Mot. at 19–20. We are unpersuaded. For one, Mahdawi is not in ICE
detention, so his appearing remotely is his responsibility, not the government’s.
But even if he were re-detained, “[f]aced with such a conflict between the
government’s unspecific financial and administrative concerns on the one hand,
and the risk of substantial constitutional harm to [Mahdawi] on the other, we have
little difficulty concluding ‘that the balance of hardships tips decidedly’ in [his]
favor.” Öztürk, 2025 WL 1318154, at *14 (quoting Mitchell v. Cuomo, 748 F.2d 804,
808 (2d Cir. 1984) (internal quotation marks omitted)).

I want an America where people come to escape authoritarianism and dictators and let their talents flourish in the United States, contributing to society and the world through the advancement of knowledge. I do not wish to be the middle man between a person of conscience and a Russian window ledge.
