If you say 10 years of milquetoast liberal climate action merits that level of anger, what's the logical response to any government that actually tries to meaningfully transition?

Honestly though the mistake people keep making, well-intentioned or not, is to lead with a "I totally get why you're mad". Nah man. The rest of Canada has a right to not want to expand fossil fuel infrastructure, and elect federal politicians who act on their behalf. Get with it.

What if, hear me out, we built enough pools, skating rinks, libraries, parks, etc for our population and designed and planned them, maintained them, and yes, required proof of residence? If you’ve moved to an exurb for the cheaper taxes, these are choices.

"The recalcitrant racists aren't changing their mind" isn't anything new, they're just newsworthy now because amoral lizard-brained politicians recognize their singlemindedness and pander to them, and foreign malign actors and oligarchs amplify the message because they love the chaos is sows.

Democrats keep trying to guilt-trip Canadians into backing down. Fuck off. Deal with your own mess. This is your problem to solve, not ours. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
Gallego, the Arizona senator, said the two sides need to figure out how to mutually step down from the current trade tensions, adding that it appeared both Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney were playing politics when trade talks fell apart last month.
"I'm not asking Mr. Carney to just bend at the knee and give in, but this is the role of diplomacy," Gallego said. "You figure out how to actually start bringing the heat down little by little to a point where you can get to the negotiation table."
Likewise, Maine's governor, Mills, said there need to be "serious negotiations on both sides," and she hopes a third party can sit down with the two countries and make it clear a tariff fight damages both of them.
"The retaliatory tariffs, I can understand why that's happening," Mills said. "I can't say it's not damaging our economy, though."

What's maybe even more disturbing is that probably 80% of citizens, whether they love or hate Trump, have shrugged off his absolutely insane posting as mere antics. Most powerful person in the world shares bipartisan recognition as a deeply unserious shitposter.

It's actually super weird to say you're at war with someone then like have their airforce over to chill. I give Carney some grace because this whole thing is some kinda fucked but it's hard to take much of what he says as anything other than the distillation of focus groups and polling results

That was a good panel. It's funny, Smith wanted to leverage secession to get an MOU she could put in the window as she let separatists fade in the rear view. Now she's loathed by both separatists and federalists, and Steven Guilbeault is the only one still talking about the MOU.

Excellent points. Centre left politicians get elected talking (often vaguely) about these issues, but then shy away from large-scale confrontations with politically powerful corps, and think the best way to fend off the right is mushy pragmatism and status quo incrementalism.

This then is also in part why the developing backlash against AI - more big company / government cooperation that doesn't apparently care very much about lived experience. This then is the vacancy in politics - easily filled by populists when others seem deaf.

With respect to those who say the major problem in the UK is growth / cost of living, I'm sorry but I think the way in which everyday life seems at the mercy of often completely unaccountable organisations is worse. And politicians talking in the abstract rather than lived experience.

Yup he's a Mushrooms middle centrist to scared to make any bold decisions. Some politicians have failed to grasp that the électorale wants them to make big changes because they're sick of the status quo. They want to project caution and government incrementally but there's no time left for that.

Framing this as an existential crisis is exactly what he wants you to do. The more you panic and bend the harder he will push. Everyone is learning this in real time. There is no win-win or even lopsided agreement he will take, his objective is to take as much as he can because he sees trade as 0sum

Respectfully I don't think you understand the game Trump is playing. This is a constant testing for weakness and concessions. You can outwait Trump but every concession you make will be in the binder of every trade negotiator for a decade to come.

Mortimer Snerd @mrtmrsnrd.bsky.social · 02/05/2026
A bad deal is worse than self-harm because you're dealing with an extortionist, not a negotiator. Concede now & you'll get your arm bent again in 6 mths when the whim strikes & he has a need to project strength. Stand up to the threat, and you help chip away at his image and maintain your position.

In cases of unneeded title, the government took land that didn't belong to them, now FN communities want compensation when returning the land is impractical. This is straightforward and logical, not an unforeseen consequence of the law Eby himself passed.

It also strikes me as confusing that there isn't a clear understanding on the legal remedy for this conundrum vis a vis property rights. The courts are telling us that our own laws require us to compensate Indigenous ppl for land when it's current use prohibits giving it back to them...
