A west Cork #painting "Red Strand Rocks" was painted one magical sunny day sitting for hours with my bicycle on a bluff above a beach. At one point mid-painting I lay down and closed my eyes for a pleasant sleep. Afterwards I cycled to Clonakilty and handed over the painting. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. The blue water of a bay comes in from the left between a headland along the horizon and in the foreground rocks in a series of strata extending into water. The headland juts out from right, has green fields and hedgerows tumbling down to jagged dark rocky edge by water. White tip of lighthouse peeps over left end slope, and a long white house is low down close to the water at the right edge of the painting. Rock strata are blue, grey, dark wine and purple with the lines running from the bottom straight up the centre of the picture breaking up in the water. They run from the entire width of the bottom edge of the painting and extend up loosely in a triangle. Sand is to left of rocks and a grass-topped ochre-grey bluff to right. Sky is a painterly yellow with paler indications of clouds. Signed top left, Liam Daly

My #painting "The Long Walk II" was painted when me and my bicycle sat in Galway by Claddagh Quay. Rain then softly landed on my face. And made the painting look funky. Then it got much heavier and washed all the paint off the canvas. So I returned the next day and started over. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. View across rich blue rippling water to narrow band across the centre of the painting consisting of a street of about two dozen terraced houses, the leftmost being 4 stories and the rest a mixture of 2 and 3 stories high, above a band of dark blue that is a quay wall. Windows and doors are dark simple soft rectangles. Houses are single colours of, from left to right, blue, 5 white 2-story houses, blue, yellow, pale green, brown, white, maroon, red, pale green, white, blue, brown, yellow, blue, yellow, white, and yellow. Slated roofs are dark blue. Sky is stormy yellow mixed in with patches of green and red, dark in patches near the top, brightest at the bottom above the roofs. The water closest to the dark quay wall has less rippling and shows a dark shimmering reflection of the houses. Foreground includes some grass and flagstones of curved quayside on left. A #painting from the west of Ireland. "Pine Island" is a subject I've painted more than once ever since I first saw Derryclare Lough when I was a teenager on a bus in Connemara and, well, it's probably best not to go into a story of love in such a short space for posting. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Art
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Lake with islet of orange and grey and olive ground, from which grow a couple of dozen Scots Pines with tall trunks and no branches or foliage until high up where there are lateral dark green blotches. Close behind is a strip of land, of orange and pink bog with grey rocks, that slopes down to the lake which runs across the full width of the painting. Behind are several rocky jagged, almost pyramidal, blue mountains, their shade of blue being lighter as the mountains recede. The reflections of the mountains and the trees can be seen in water in blues and blacks rippling diagonally. The sky is pale blue with a feint white cloud on the left half, also reflected in the water in diagonal rippling strokes. A small amount of land of grasses of orange and green peeps up along the bottom edge. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A #painting from somewhere in Ireland. "Ruined House". Before my longer cycling adventures I used to do countless single day loops from home of anything up to over 200 km, stopping to eat sandwiches, to sketch, or to look at birds, trees, and buildings in need of love. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas panel. A patchwork of cloudy lime green fields sloping down from the left to the right. Fields are separated by thin dark green hedgerows with sporadic bushes that have soft curved edges. Hints of red peep through the dark green hedgerows. The titular house is just lust left of centre, grey and missing a roof, with its gable end on the left in blue shadow, as is the top of the left side of the inside of the gable at the right end and two internal walls. To the right of it is a large wide grey industrial shed with the left sloping roof very pale. The sky is rows of smokey white clouds on pale blue with the undercoat of red showing through in parts as a feint pink. Signed bottom left, Liam

A Dublin #painting "Ormond Quay" came from a time when I would spend hours walking the streets of the city centre and then paint them in my sleep. And they were all like this. In reality this was the only one that I actually painted; the rest are still sitting in my head. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics painted very loosely in bold colours on mat board. Frontal view of a row of 5 buildings of different heights all joined together. The one on the left edge has five storeys, the rest have four. They are greys, oranges, and greens, with dark blue roofs looking like hats and punctuate by chimneys of pale pink. In front of the buildings is the granite river wall across the road rendered in orange, with the white/grey railings of the boardwalk attached and its support bars in the maroon shadows of the river wall underneath above the grey-green river. One building has a red door with a white fantail, the rest of the buildings all have shopfronts. Windows and doors are mostly light and sketchy with some parts having dark outlines. Second storey above red door with fantail has balconies. Two buildings have contrasting corner bricks, red on pale orange on the left-most building, and white on pale green on the second from right building. Sky is a canary yellow. I took this photo of the painting before I added my signature.

A little #painting that took a long time. "Flower, Mountain" came from when I lived in north Donegal and with my little dog would walk for hours under very dark clouds. This little plant with its golden flowers coped a lot better than either of us did with the very strong wind. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on paper textured for acrylic painting. On the left a stalky green plant with 6 small bright yellow flowers stands up out of long grass while behind it is a ridge of undulating green hills and directly behind the flowers in bold contrast is a broody turquoise sky. To the right on the horizon is a whale-shaped light violet mountain. The long grass of the bottom third is violet and dark greens all leaning to the right, with highlights of light turquoise bending in arcs to the right. Signed bottom right in orange, Liam Daly

A #painting, "Galway, Cross Street Upper". When I worked for a bank more than one person said I should get a dog, and a string, and move to Galway. But those weren’t nice people. I love streets. For the shapes mostly. Galway never disappoints. But yes, that’s Neachtain’s. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape
Landscape format in very loose painterly acrylics and black ink line. A front view of two buildings. On the left is a 3-story building with at street level a dark blue pub front with yellow trim. The door is on the right and a window to the left. The upper stories are cream with two narrow windows on the 2nd story, and the same above them on the 3rd story but with an extra window on a box part that projects out on the left corner. Above it is a gable with another narrow window but in the centre. The building on the right is wider, being 3 window bays wide, flat roofed, and having two different shop fronts at street level, a white one with green fascia on the left which has an archway to the right of its central door and window to the left. There is a black shopfront on the right, which has a narrow door on the left and a very large window to its right. There are white corner stones on the edge of the whole building at street level. The upper stories are the same across the whole building being grey with red corner stones. The two buildings have a narrow gap between them which is is filled at street level with a lilac wall hosting an arched doorway. The sky is a strong blue. The footpath is grey. The whole picture has different colours smudged and flecked throughout. Signed bottom right in black, Liam Daly

A #painting from the south of Ireland. "Passage East" came out of a time I visited the Waterford village by bicycle, and this was how it greeted me as I rolled off the ferry across Waterford Harbour from the Wexford side. Drinking tea here was like drinking tea in a fairy tale. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. Sunny day. Pale turquoise sky over very pale green and yellow square open at front and bright buildings with dark windows facing in on other sides. An orange two-story house is on the left, and behind to its right is the gable end of a white building, while facing us from the far side is a white 2-story house with violet slate roof, and adjoining it is a prominent 4-story yellow building, 4 window bays wide and sun-glinting pale blue slate roof. Behind is a green bushy steep hill, almost a bluff, with small red building perched on top, its shadowed gable end facing over the town. To right of the square in immediate foreground are road signs including "Welcome to Passage East" in white on red, and a black on white R683 directional sign to "Port Láirge - Waterford", both against a white wall in a flower bed surrounded by a curved wall of white-washed stones. In the centre of the square is a stone walled circular flower-bed, of blue-grey and orange stones in shadow, and 2 dark blue cars to the left where we see the edge of another flower bed. Blue and yellow bunting is strung across the square from lamp-posts. Signed bottom left in red, Liam Daly

A Dublin #painting. "Ormond Quay" is the quay I've painted most of those in our capital city. Like all of my paintings of the quays it came out of a lifetime of walks along both sides of the Liffey, combined with a love of squares and rectangles. One of my happiest places. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Panorama format in painterly acrylics on board with uneven right edge where board was crudely broken rather than cut. Painting shows front view of a terrace of 13 buildings from directly across the River Liffey. Buildings are red-brick, 4 or 5 storeys high and mostly narrow being 2 or 3 window bays wide, and with shop fronts at street level or a Georgian door with a fanlight. They are in various shades of orange, yellow, red and pink, with one at left end painted white, and most topped with a grey cap stone. Roofs are dark blue or purple slate caps punctuated by chimneys of red brick. Sky is pure flat blue. Bottom half of painting is river, in short criss-crossing diagonal rippling strokes reflecting the colours of the buildings. Separating the water from the street is a dark wine river wall topped with white railings of a boardwalk. Signed bottom right in dark blue, Liam Daly

A Donegal #painting, "Errigal". This picture of the iconic mountain in the northwest of Ireland was painted during the first of my 3 annual 24-hour live video-streaming painting social media yokes. Looking at it makes me nostalgic for Donegal and for painting live on video. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in very loose acrylics on mat board. Along the horizon are blue mountains, the most prominent being a pyramidal almost stand-alone one on the left in pale blues, greens and purples, all in strokes coming down from the top. It is noticeably paler closer to its peak. In front of it is a narrow very dark horizontal band of blue and magenta, and in front of that is an expanse of flat land comprised of ochre and red and yellow horizontal strokes, suggestive of bog. The foreground in front of that across the bottom of the painting is blotches of blue suggestive of foliage and shadows with lots of stalks of white and green. The sky is a blotchy mix of yellows with some white mixed in indicating clouds. I took this photo of the painting before adding my signature.

A southeast of Ireland #painting. "Wexford, Bull Ring" came out of several trips to Wexford town where I walked a lot, frequently arrested by the options that junctions present you. Am not always great with choice, so I'm stopped a lot but when stopped I'm looking. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on mat board. On a brightly sunny day under a turquoise sky with white clouds on the right is a junction with two narrow buildings in the centre facing the viewer and a street to the side of both, the street on the left rising up slightly and the street on the right dropping down slightly. Street surfaces are transparent orange washed over an abstract pattern of darker orange with loose maroon rectangles. Footpaths are canary yellow. Left central building is white with blue trim, 3 narrow windows wide, and 4 storeys high. Adjoining on right is 3-storey green building. Both have shopfronts at street level, as do buildings down both streets to either side. Upper stories of Whyte's Hotel, a modern white building, is visible over buildings at end of street on left. Street on right also has a statue on a plinth and small ornamental trees. Strong shadows are cast left and behind. Signed bottom left in feint red, Liam Daly

A #painting from County Cork. "Cobh II" was painted one day when cycling between friends in Carrigtwohill and Carrigaline, both of whom I'd originally met online, and I took in Great Island specifically to paint the Cork harbour town. The painting was finished when back home. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. View of town on a hillside as seen from a pier. Under a yellow painterly sky a gothic blue cathedral with a steeple on the left end sits on top of the town. Below it and to the left is a row of tall dark blue supporting stone arches under the green stone boundary wall and walkway which drops down to a jumble of blue slate roofs. Along the bottom across the full width of the painting is the front street scene of 7 buildings, each with 3 stories though of varied heights, and joined together save for one gap. They have shop fronts at street level, upper stories are coloured, left to right, pink, white, yellow, orange, red, teal, and yellow, with contrasting window frames and details including dormer windows. Buildings are 3 or 4 window bays wide, all narrow windows coloured in a blue or a black. A couple of small trees with a ball of bright green foliage are on the left, and up beside the cathedral there is one at the left end and 2 at the right. Parts of the fronts of other buildings are visible in gaps up the hill to the top on the right. Signed top right in blue on yellow sky, Liam Daly

Another west of Ireland #painting "Westport, High Street" came from a time I was cycling in County Mayo and after climbing up this hill I stopped because I was feeling a bit blue. And yellow and purple. Westport is beautiful from so many angles; I'll be painting it again #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #Scape
Landscape format in painterly acrylics. Under a canary smoky yellow sky with touches of orange breaking through, we are looking downhill at the far side of a street of 2-story houses stepping down, most of which are in pale yellows, with pale purple and blue slate roofs that have touches of navy, and red indicating the slates, and are punctuated by white and yellow chimneys. Only the path of the left side of the street is visible by the left edge of the painting, until the bottom of the hill when the street bends right bringing the houses on the left side into view. Road surface is blue with central dashed white line, and paths are bright yellow with a tall dark streetlamp in the left foreground. Cars parked on both sides mostly in whites and blues. Small narrow trees with sparse green foliage are dotted along both sides of the street, but at the top on the right side is a large tree having dark foliage of violet and blue and some red highlights that reaches the top of the painting. Purple and blue roofs of other streets are at bottom of hill punctuated by glimpses of yellow gables and a couple of taller green square buildings with roofs. On far side of town is a mass of trees of violet and dark blue across the full width of the painting. Beyond is a flat-topped hill with a parallel row of grey-green fields. In this distance on the horizon are pale blue rounded hills on the right and a soft pyramidal one in the centre. Signed bottom right in dark blue on the pale blue road surface, Liam Daly

A #painting from Ireland's southwest. "Skibbereen, Main Street" came from a moment when I arrived by bicycle in the west Cork town facing these four fabulous buildings so I stayed there stopped, sitting on my saddle, just staring until I had painted them in my head. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear #UrbanGaze
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on canvas. Front view of terrace of four 3-story buildings with shop fronts at street level. Upper stories of leftmost building is light brown with "C Connolly" on fascia of maroon and peach shopfront, next is taller and blue-green with no signage visible on its grey-green shopfront, next is yellow and same height as blue-green one, with "Pierce Hickey" on white fascia below a clock and line of flowers and above the shopfront of orange trim, and rightmost is a lower height and a very pale blue, almost white. Each building is two window bays wide save for the rightmost which is cropped at the third window. The rightmost building has gold lettering of Field's Coffee on its dark green fascia and below it the windows and doors are all topped with white arches. All windows of upper stories have white trim, with the first story of the two central buildings having a white triangle over each. All roofs are slate of a smokey blue violet, and chimneys a muted grey-green and purple. Sky is painterly orange, more yellow lower down beyond the left edge of the leftmost building. Foreground is street surface of purple brushed brokenly over red with a triangular turquoise traffic island housing two planters of blooming flowers, a street sign and directional signs. "Sligo Town" A sketch I did a couple of years ago of the view I had after leaving the train station and dropping down the steps to the bus station to wait for the last leg to a wondrous world. This is across the road and it took a lot of will power to not stroll over for a pint. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format on right-hand page of open sketchbook is a loose sketch done in black ink line and watercolour wash. Sky is left blank white. View across dark road surface with yellow box markings, a zebra crossing and a median island, at a dark grey stone 2-storey terrace pub with ten narrow window bays in the upper storey and at street level several doors and large windows with various black signs above. A white building with pink shopfront is at left end and a 3-storey white building set in behind next to it. At the right end is a side street with buildings of varying sizes. Roofs are blues and purple. Some green foliage peeps up behind in places. Handwritten on top: Sligo Town 15 August 2023

A Dublin #painting "Grattan Bridge, Two Domes" I painted in the mid-1990s essentially as a study for a another painting - one which I never got around to starting until over twenty yrs later. This hangs in the US because stupidly I gave it away. Still like remembering it though. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format but nearly square. In acrylics but used as wet as watercolours on mixed media paper. Very sketchily painted with big broad strokes of colour washes with loosely painted dark lines giving shape and form. Centre is the back to back sea-horses and pole of a hippocampus lamp coming out of the top rail and latticework - all is green painted metal with some dark shadows and yellow highlights to indicate sun. Behind is the River Liffey to the west with red buildings on the quays of both sides above the river walls, and the dome of the Adam & Eve church on Merchants Quay on the left, and the dome of the Four Courts on the right further back in behind buildings due to the bend in the river further on. The river wall on the left, southside quay, is in shadow rendered as very dark blue, whereas the river wall on the right, northside quay, is in sunlight rendered in light orange. Sky is a loosely washed streaky blue. I took this photo before I added my signature.

An Irish #painting from a while back. I painted "Newgrange Kerbstone" during a phase of painting rocks and stones. It shows the right half of Kerbstone 52, at the rear of the mound directly in line with the entrance to the passage tomb and its more famous entrance kerbstone. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in acrylics on canvas. On a black background is the flat side of a large rock with carvings. The edge of another large rock is at the right side with in between the two large rocks a couple of dozen small rocks, rendered with hard graphical curved and straight edges and the background black between them. All rocks are shades of warm and cool greys. The carvings feature several cup holes with ovals around them and concentric arcs adjoining. The rock with the carvings, the one on the left dominating the painting, also has several fissures cutting into it from the edge. They are also black. A few years ago I made a crop of a larger Dublin #painting available as a print because people liked the chimneys just by themselves. So I've made it available again, just "The Poolbeg Chimneys" in the new print shop in various sizes: fineartamerica.com/featured/the... #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Portrait format in acrylics on canvas. Against a sky of painterly rich yellow, with very soft subtle hints of orange and green, are two chimney stacks of approx. equal height. On their top halves they have six red bands separated by white bands, and on their lower halves are green-grey concrete which broadens slightly as they approach the bottom. Blocking the view of their very bottoms is a pier of which we see the rear of its stone wall, rendered in blue with paler blue stones and top, and below it to the water a band of rip-rap rendered in dark blue with orange and light blue pieces. Protruding up from the other side of the pier are a few white masts and a lamp-post. The water is pale blue and green heavily sparkling with white dashes and dots, much more heavily so on the right half. Beyond the pier and before the left chimney are blockish buildings in various blues. Behind the stacks along the horizon in the distance is a band of pale blue indicative of a tree line of buildings or both.

A #painting of some birds. "Rooks, Wires, Hedgerow" came out of a menacing afternoon when I cycled around West Cork. The coastline looked magnificent but I spent a lot of time looking at rooks. In general you can't go too far wrong when you spend a lot of time looking at rooks. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mixed media paper. Against a dark cloudy sky of lilac and blue a dark wooden telegraph pole rises from the busy thicket of a hedgerow and tilts to the left. On the wires it supports, both left and right, and on the supporting wires, are about two dozen rooks. Birds and pole are silhouetted; hedgerow is a mess of tangled lines, mostly black but with some blue, pale green and dark red also. The hedgerow runs across the full width of the painting, occupying about a quarter of the bottom albeit slightly sloping up from left to right, much like the wires at the top of the picture attached to either side of the main pole. A second pole is in the distance by the left edge. Signed bottom right in pale green, Liam Daly

#painting Once upon a time I took a lift to a random place in rural England, then walked for over 30 km right through the night. At one point I climbed up a tree and slept for bit. Later to escape the dew I lay on a picnic table outside a pub beside the Trent and watched the "Sunrise at Gunthorpe".
Landscape format in painterly acrylics on mixed media paper. Two boats in coverings are dark brown almost in silhouette moored to a narrow jetty on a river that runs from the bottom right quadrant to a point half way up the left side. The rive, from left to right, is in loosely vertical bands of blazing red, bright yellow, and dark brown, each section of which has contrasting individual short horizontal brushstrokes, of yellow on red, orange on yellow, and orange and yellow on the brown. The bottom left quadrant is where the dark triangle of the left river bank is, rendered in very dark brown with lots of highlighted coloured strokes of orange, pink, blue, red and green. The far bank running almost the full width of the painting is a low grey horizontal cloud of mist sitting on the river, and behind it is a mass of trees rendered in dark green with highlighted strokes of paler greens and yellows and some orange. The sky is the top third of the painting, a fiery red-orange in the left, ochre in the middle and dark brown on the right, all with horizontal short wide strokes of pale yellows and oranges. The jetty runs parallel with the river bank and further away in the distance is another boat, while to the left of it on the bank is the silhouette of a leafless tree of a handful of branches. A dark pole rises up from the right end of the jetty by the 2 boats in the foreground, and slightly wobbles in its reflection like the 2 covered boats. Signed in the bottom left in yellow, Liam '92
