I love that @mackinlibrary.bsky.social is featuring school librarians! Is this a new series?! And @mackinlibrary.bsky.social, can school librarians express interest in being featured? Love this. Keep it up! #tlsky #schoollibrary

Favorite read of May was A Curious Kind of Magic by Mara Rutherford. Usually I like my fantasy with dystopia and/or lots of action. But this cozy fantasy was deeellliigghhhhtful & exactly what hectic May needed. Great characters. Phenomenal audiobook narrator. #yalit #cozyfantasy #tlsky #bookrecs

Favorite read of April was Isle of Ever by @jencalonita.bsky.social. Mysterious notes/clues, an inheritance, a cat who shows up everywhere, a pirate, cursed treasure, and more! What’s not to love? #mglit #kidlit #tlsky #bookrecs

What to Do When Students See Schoolwork as Too Challenging
Students often don’t measure academic difficulty objectively—they measure it emotionally. Teachers can tap into research to provide the resources and support students need to complete assignments.

As a HS teacher, I worry that too often we take a fixed mindset into our classrooms around students and conversation. "These are the students who will speak up, and these are the students who won't." We need way more conversations and strategies like this in way more classrooms. 🙏

A5 Picking an old book they’ve heard about 20 times. Assuming everyone will like every book/genre you do. Not thinking about their interests. Those are some things that could kill a book talk. #TLSkyChat

A3 If I go too over the top the middle schoolers will know I’m not being authentic. That said I naturally talk with my hands a lot and have a very expressive tone and face. 😂 So that helps. I also try to put in things they’ll relate to or questions. #TLSkyChat

I used blogs &examples online to help plan. Shoutout to a blog that mentioned tracking which books are used! (I just scanned the barcodes in an Excel sheet &typed the title beside it; just in case someone needed one. Plus it’ll help me quantify the data…which sometimes I forget to do.) 3/3

I finally did Blind Date with a Book this year! Been wanting to try it for years! Long story short - early February is always a busy time, I’m not efficient at wrapping, and I sometimes have to hurdle over my own perfectionism. A5 Sometimes a student will share that they are grieving and sometimes they ask for a book with a character that is also grieving or sometimes they ask for a funny book or a distraction. When a student is visibly upset, I try to check on them and see if they need to talk to a counselor or #TLSkyChat
