Spain reports one row per technology per region, but solar PV comes in two flavours: 45.8 GW grid-connected and 9.5 GW behind-the-meter self-consumption. If your analysis only counts the former, you're missing a sixth of the country's PV fleet before you even start.

Is all code becoming the same? On one hand, 95% of Kaggle submissions that set a random seed now use 42 (a Hitchhiker's Guide joke LLMs love). But, it turns out that while coding syntax is converging, approaches to problems are not converging. Human prompters drive real variety in solutions.

Airbus is putting its data beyond America's reach. They will run on Scaleway, a French provider, instead. A US law lets American authorities request data held by US firms, including data stored in servers outside the country. Europe is slowly trying to lean less on American technology.

Trump seems to have the same reactions to the Iran war outcome and the 2020 election. Says P. Krugman: "A guy who can’t admit that he lost a presidential election to Joe Biden is not going to be able to admit that he lost a war to the mullahs of Iran."

The world’s ten richest people — all Americans — saw their collective net worth increase by $260 billion in April. These ten people are now worth a combined $2.7 trillion. The bottom 50% of U.S. households, 66 million in total, is worth $4.3 trillion. Wondering if inequality is out of control?

Congress didn’t lose its war powers. It neglected them. Decades of bipartisan deference to presidents have weakened the Founders’ constitutional check — widening the gap between the foreign policy voters want and the one they get, argues Cato’s Brandan Buck. ow.ly/ilyT50YR5Jx

Europe has made remarkable progress cleaning up its electricity. In 2024, just 29% of European electricity came from fossil fuels - down from 53% in 2005. But electricity is only 23% of Europe's total energy use. Look at other sectors & it changes dramatically. More here: substack.com/@janrosenow

Europe's electricity: 29% fossil fuels in 2024, down from 53% in 2005. Progress. But transport is still 92% fossil. Buildings: 71%. Industry: 61%. And 95% of EU oil and 88% of gas imported. Switching suppliers doesn't fix this. Electrification and efficiency do. More here: rdcu.be/feOjc

✍️ New article: Could biofuels meet demand for global aviation? Biofuels get a lot of attention as a way to decarbonize aviation. A small amount of biofuel is already blended into jet fuel supplies in some countries. For many airlines, biofuels are currently the most practical decarbonization option
Using all liquid biofuels for aviation would meet just over one-third of demand.

Bar chart with two vertical bars: left bar labeled "Global liquid biofuel production" with value 1,400 TWh; right bar labeled "Energy consumed for aviation" with value 3,930 TWh. A note above the chart states less than 1 percent of global liquid biofuels are currently used for aviation and that reallocating all of them to aviation would provide just over one-third of demand.

Data sources listed: Energy Institute; International Energy Agency; Bergero et al. (2023).
