Trying to make Bristol modestly and slightly better by enabling more people to cycle and fewer to drive or at least to drive less often.

157 years ago, on the 9th of December 1868, the world's first traffic lights were installed outside the Palace of Westminster in London. It used semaphore arms during the day and green/red gas lamps at night. It had to be operated by a constable. It exploded on January 2nd 1869. #otd #history 🗃️
Information about the new system. Richard Mayne was the head of the Metropolitan Police. Image reproduced under creative commons licence. POLICE NOTICE. Street crossing signals. CAUTION. The Semaphore Arms lowered and by Night with a Green Light. STOP. The Semaphore Arms extended and by Night with a Red Light. By the Signal "CAUTION", all persons in charge of Vehicles and Horses are warned to pass over the Crossing with care, and due regard to the safety of Foot Passengers. The Signal "STOP", will only be displayed when it is necessary that Vehicles and Horses shall be actually stopped on each side of the Crossing to allow the passage of Persons on Foot; notice being thus given to all persons in charge of Vehicles and Horses to stop clear of the Crossing. Ultimately the correct solution to 'some people can't afford essential journeys' is to give those people, specifically, a cash transfer. Don't do a fare freeze, don't do weird things that are just attempts to do social policy, badly, via a clever-clever mechanism.

What words remain for a government that goes to court to insist it be allowed to continue selling weapons to a state committing genocide, then sends a letter of complaint when those weapons are used?
On Monday the UK and 27 other countries signed a sharply critical letter condemning the Israeli military’s killing of hundreds of Palestinians seeking food in recent weeks and calling for an immediate end to the conflict.

WE DID IT!!! The government has just announced that it´s scrapping FPTP for mayoral elections. In May, this absurd system resulted in some Mayors being elected on as little as 25% of the vote. This is a victory of communities around the country. But it's just the beginning...
Breaking news: First Past the Post to be scrapped for mayoral elections. Now time for Westminster!

If you choose to buy and drive an SUV or "light truck" then you are also choosing to put vulnerable road users, particularly children, at greater risk of death. You can spin it all you want about interior space, driving position or personal safety, but that's what it is.

As I think every time I am forced to travel on a GWR train with my bicycle: why are cyclists expected to put up with such shoddy provision? A tiny, literal bike hanger, only accessible for people tall and strong enough to get it in, that only fits 1 bike, and causes damage to the rim and spokes.

John Curtice notes on Today that mayoral races could be won with as little as 25% of the vote. But it's worse than that: if turnout in (eg) the West of England race is the same as in 2001 - 36% - a party might win with 9% of eligible votes. First Past the Post is an absurdity in these conditions.

These stats from the City of London (aka the square mile) are unbelievable. They’ve already exceeded their 2030 targets. Cycling up 70% since 2017, motor traffic down 34%. The full report is v interesting - they do proper traffic surveys every 2 years.

Jones *unequivocally* supported a proposed bill amendment in the House of Lords to ban floating bus stops. She now says floating bus stops work extremely well. Breathtaking.
@iamnicksimpson asks @greenjennyjones

"Out of interest, what is your suggested design for bus stops and cycle lanes"

Jones replies

"I don't need to recreate designs. Some fbs work extremely well.
But *all* vulnerable road users have to be taken into account."

@rantyhighwayman.bsky.social I had to nick one of your images to prove this point but if the floating bus stop is inherently dangerous because it involves crossing "uncontrolled traffic", then crossing any road anywhere must logically also be - unless you apply motornormativity to the equation.
A slide explaining why floating bus stops with mitigated design features such as contrasting surfaces, controlled crossings, and tactile paving are inherently safer in terms of design than potentially hundreds of thousands of uncontrolled pedestrian crossings that are never subject to complaints from politicians because "they've always been there" despite their status as barriers to inclusive mobility being long since established and proven.

The moment a Low Traffic Neighbourhood goes in, drivers who want to rat run through your street will start shouting that ‘the old and disabled can’t cycle!!!’. As Zwolle, Netherlands, clearly shows, segregated cycling and LTNs *increase* freedom for those with mobility issues.

IMHO marginal but this is new and experimental. The test of the Park Row cycle track is whether it really separates bikes from cars; if so people will use it and it will succeed. It looks promising.

Denying traffic induction, and evaporation, is like denying gravity! Why do we have 4x as many cars in Bristol now as we had when I was growing up here in 1970s? Partly because cost is no longer the barrier it once was, partly because the city was retrofitted around roads and motor transport.

If traffic flows like water why are there 4 times as many vehicles in the city as when I grew up here in the 1970s? Does Cllr Weston think it's been raining cars?

By me: Cycle paths are pointless if women don't feel safe using them at night. If you want to give people the choice to cycle, there need to be good options for everyone (note: I had the headline amended as research shows almost a quarter of routes are deemed socially unsafe after dark, not half)

Half of London's cycleways are unsafe after dark – and this curtails women's freedom
More than a quarter of Transport for London cycleways are deemed socially unsafe after dark
