I recently tried out an alternative method (a fifth one not yet mentioned here!). But I'm not sure exactly what to call it, because it feels weird to call it a ratio table in this context... but I'm using it in a similar fashion!

So why do we keep using that model at the secondary level? (I can understand elementary level). Especially for #Math, where many special education teachers don't come in with the strong content knowledge in math, and need to spend time learning it themselves more deeply to support their students?

I can't see how #Co-Teaching with multiple partner teachers (because you've cohorted a group of students) can be as effective, given the limited co-planning time. It seems like that approach would turn the special educator into a glorified paraprofessional, and potential behavior manager instead.

My #SpecialEducation question: Is there any #EducationResearch about the efficacy of these two scheduling structures or comparisons of them? In my experience (as both a math gen ed co-teacher & a coach/consultant), I think the content-area specialization is a more powerful form of #Coteaching.

They can specialize in that content area and over time, learn how best to support SWDs in that area, and identify/anticipate places that commonly trip up students. They can have dedicated co-planning time, working with their partner teacher to ensure both know the content & how to support students.

However, that requires them to co-teach in multiple subjects, which can be challenging. Plus, with 4+ co-teachers, it seems impractical to ensure that each pair has co-planning time. Co-teachers who partner with 1 or 2 teachers of the same content have the opportunity to dive deep into content.

In secondary ed, teachers typically specialize in content, & teach multiple classes the same (or similar) course content (i.e. a MS math teacher who has 4 sections of 8th grade math or a HS science teacher who has 5 sections of Biology). Deeper content knowledge is often needed in these courses.

This. Accessibility in terms of being able to get access to games in the first place isn’t evenly distributed. I had same experience as a kid. Second hand games, second or third hand consoles. That is all going away and it’s creating another pointless economic barrier to participating in culture

This paper has been a REALLY long time coming. It's about a course I taught for many years called Tools of Inquiry, in which I try to teach students to ask and explore their own mathematical questions, including with technology. It's a little like an introduction to research experience at scale!

I cannot draw for my life. My bad, nowhere to scale drawings were a central component (and regular source of laughter) of my classes. But I also see a difference between hand drawings and publications. This feels particularly aggregious... I would prefer acute angles < 80-100°< obtuse....

Excellent post! I really like your thoughts on making teacher moves more diagnostic & less procedural. Especially this: *require* students to show their understanding, don't rely on self-report of understanding. #iTeachMath

The real move I had to learn was to stop asking students to report their understanding and start requiring them to show their understanding (or misunderstanding!). All students, simultaneously, in a form that provides useful data about the entire class.

From their Alg class last year, they've already covered using the distance formula + Pythagorean theorem to verify if a triangle was right or not. So some of this may overlap with older knowledge. There might not be something about diagonals yet, but squares have equal sides & 90 degree angles.

Oh, what about using time zones?! I just remembered that there are (6×4) 24 time zones (1 for each hour of the day), & each time zone is roughly 15 degrees. I know there's 360 degrees in a full revolution, so the product must be 360! #MathIsFigureOutAble #ITeachMath

VERY true on all counts. In my town of like 1000 there were ZERO "queer kids" at school and the #1 way to make fun of someone was to call them f-- or d---. I was already queer, but couldn't even be an ally on the outside until college (late 90s).

After being delayed 3+ hours in MSP, & assuring us that Orange County was extending their curfew for us, when we were about an hour out, they told us we got diverted to LAX because orange county revoked the extension. Luckily, they're gonna send us to SNA in a shuttle bus, but I'm exhausted.
