Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I'm glad I plucked up the courage to go for it. Because it was quite wet it meant the people at the Dept of Health stand had nothing better to do than talk to me 😂 I've been trying to tell the Dept about my work for years but maybe this might finally be the time the dementia branch hear about it? 🥹 020

Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 23/06/2026I'm excited about the funding app I just put in! I met lovely Lesley on the Australian Association of Gerontology Forums 2 years ago and we've been slowly scoping out this project around Lesley's PhD work, my unemployment + new job etc. I really hope we get it and can do some stuff! 😁 #AcademicSky 020

Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 17/05/2026Yeeeeah. I'm not a prof, so not the same volume of concern, but I'm also a solo PI bringing in money to work with fellow postdocs on insecure contracts, who are all awesome humans with young families. We're all using these opportunities to build up our karma points for the future 😅 100
Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 16/05/2026Yeah it's pretty awful. She was a solo PI with many bright dependents just like you, but if you don't feel like you have any safety net, it's hard to focus on just getting good science done. When you get to the point that you're losing sleep over it, something's gotta give. Grant fomo is too real 🫠 110
Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 16/05/2026Feeling this right now. Take care of yourself! Someone I know had to take stress leave and ended up just closing their whole lab and going back to industry. Their host institution withdrew funding for their lab on the basis they were getting enough grants to become self-sufficient... big mistake. 110
Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 16/05/2026I am developing a deep-seated hatred of AI generated infographics. The coloured pencil/watercolour look is such a giveaway and the information is all laid out in the same kind of way, which isn't even that useful from a sci comm perspective. I am just a grumpy old woman researcher having a vent lol 070

Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 14/05/2026Today one of the PhD students in our unit was practicing their 3min thesis presentation. Marianne Piano @mporthoptics.bsky.social · 25/04/2026Ahh it's that time of the year when I get lots of enquiries from prospective students about whether I can supervise PhDs, and I tell them their doctorate will outlast whatever contract I'm on 🙃 #AcademicSky 030
