From #Copenhagen to #Uppsala! The past two days were full of engaging discussions and insights into diverse, and yet often mutually constitutive colonial legal systems and their influence on family formation in the Caribbean. Many thanks for the invitation! @mouseemperor.bsky.social

The maddest someone has ever gotten at me was when I talked about the child sized manacles Jefferson had at Monticello for 9 year old children. They could not cope with the idea that a child the same age as their child had been enslaved. And it made them angry that I made them know facts

I once read a source in which a British captain, after the anguish cries of a FOUR YEAR OLD enslaved girl bothered him so much on the voyage, went below deck and stabbed her to death just for quiet. If you’re not familiar with the primary sources, it’s difficult to comprehend how bad it was.

Ursula le Guin, on the accusation that fantasy is an escape from reality
[“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the know-nothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”]
