Elon Musk can "own" some gigafactory in Arizona or a launch pad in SoCal *only* because a state exists to enforce his title on his behalf. That is, because the violence of the state is *a service provided to him* as an owner of a title to land and machines. The state's purpose is to provide […]

It’s not too late to decide you don’t want to have techno-fascist beliefs! If you found yourself nodding along to the quote and then were shocked that it’s actually fascism, you can ask yourself things like: - “Why do I think my notion of ‘progress’ is the only correct notion of ‘progress’ for […]

the results of my scientific inquiry. you may not like it skaters, but this is what peak skate shoe lacing looks like #skateboarding
Photo from the front toe side of a cream-colored Converse Louie Lopez Pro 2 (just the left shoe). The shoestrings are laced in Ian Fieggen’s “Hiking/Biking” pattern: the laces cross the tongue of the shoe horizontally (instead of making X-shapes), and instead of the knot tying at the center of the shoe tongue, it’s tied completely on the inner-foot side of the shoe (i.e. the right side of the left foot). The shoe is made of light cream-colored suede, with a white rubber sole white suede tongue, white laces, and vibrant orange insole visible. It’s placed on a concrete surface with stark fluorescent light coming from overhead.

7-year-old me—who felt bitterly betrayed by Tony Hawk Trick Tips Vol. 1 misrepresenting how easy ollies are—would be shocked by this turn of events.
An extended leg holds up a skate deck at an angle so the bottom is visible against a light-colored concrete floor. The leg’s got tan chinos and a dirty grey Converse All-Star shoe on. The deck is green with a large gold dragon in front of a circular white moon, standing on top of a red fire hydrant. The wheels are plain and graphic-free aside from some simple blue text. The whole board is immaculate (i.e. visibly brand-new). Below the bottom truck, a sticker that says “cowtown” in plain white text is visible.
