Let us do without soldiers. The joy built upon successful slaughter is not the right kind of joy; it will not do; it is fearful and it is trivial.

Anybody know of any papers looking at Black leaders and their impact on hiring in *any* capacity? I know there's stuff in education, but also asking political science, sociology, etc.

Do you think of some new kind of religious prophet/zealot took the world by storm, and it resulted in mass conversion on several continents, that we'd reset to year 0 and start counting up again?

The big national grocery chains need to be seized by the workers, converted into employee-owned coops, nationalized and turned over to municipalities, or in any other way, shape, or form destroyed.

Light is the left hand of darkness and darkness the right hand of light. Two are one, life and death, lying together like lovers in kemmer, like hands joined together, like the end and the way.

In this case, I hate being right. Also, as soon as they took that photo of Mae on the bus, I called it: a birth/death double whammy. Why can't TV producers let our elders live a little? #TedLasso

Forget sports. People want to know if you'll have their back if they are fired from some random desk job for transitioning. If they can walk into a pharmacy and not be refused service. If they can use the correct bathroom at the post office.

For the record: The University of California has never asked me for anything like this. But I am seeing this line of questioning arising in a rapidly growing number of American contexts. It has been asked of me, personally, elsewhere. And that is very, very alarming.

ANOTHER death in ICE detention which appears likely to be the result of medical neglect. A diabetic who told his family members he wasn't receiving regular insulin shots OR getting diabetic-appropriate meals just died in custody. The U.S. prison-ICE detention-industrial complex kills.

Public health is at its best when you don't even notice it's working. It doesn't just pop up during a pandemic. It's clean water. It’s food safety. It’s disease prevention. It’s protecting our communities before a crisis hits. That's why we need public health champions in Congress!

How men feared women! she thought, walking among the late-flowering roses. Not as individuals, but women when they talked together, worked together, spoke up for one another - then men saw plots, cabals, constraints, traps being laid.

I feel the same way as an independent reader. My e-books are owned by Google and now Bookshop.org. I have no ownership of them, and even my ability to highlight and take notes is dependent on the apps' functionality at a given time.
bookshop.org
Bookshop.org: Buy books online. Support local bookstores.
A better way to buy books online. Every purchase financially supports local independent bookstores.

This is a huge issue for scholarship, not just for library collections. We can’t keep ebooks, etexts, ejournals, only rent them. Which means: - paying over & over again to achess the same titles, & - no guarantees of finding the same works later; they can be yanked at any time.

21) You have never participated in a draft process for a paper in your life. When forced to, you instead faked a draft, writing a finished paper and then hand-writing a worse version of it. You edit WHILE you're writing. Then you're happy with what you wrote.
@NomeDaBarbarian, quoting a post with an image of a car mirror, which says "assignments on syllabus are closer than they appear."

Ah, #ADHD, where there are four days which exist - yesterday, today, tomorrow, and THE DUE DATE, which is lurking nebulous in the bushes until it arrives to devour tomorrow.

It's never mattered how clearly it's been marked, for me. Time doesn't exist. Schedules don't matter.

Add to that - you've got the Drafting process, which SHOULD help with this,

Except why would I ever write a draft?

Why would I write something that wasn't intended to be the finished project?

I wish I'd been able to fix that mindset. Maybe if I had known my D/x in school...But High School prepared me *poorly* for that. I learned by experience that I could write a five page paper the day before, and get praised for how much work and thought I had clearly put in to it.

They didn't TELL ME they were trying to teach me the habit, so I didn't learn it.

By the time I got to college, I was simply expected to have already picked up this habit from the drafting process IN WHICH I HAD NEVER PARTICIPATED, because WHY WOULD YOU?

I'd never needed to. I'd always been told I was smart. I'd been praised for last minute work.

If this had been the goal? If they had been telling us that this was the point - not teaching us that this was the only way to make sure you had a good product you turned in, which was CLEARLY NONSENSE...

Well, maybe things would have been different. But they told me the wrong thing. They told me WHY I had to learn this, and then I would decide whether that was true, and I trusted them.

Turns out there was this second thing going on the whole time, and FUCK, DID THEY FAIL AT PREPARING ME FOR THAT.

I've also heard something that shook me.

A deadline gives us adrenaline.

Adrenaline allows us to produce dopamine. Which we are otherwise constantly lacking.

We're addicts chasing a high - especially when undiagnosed.

The "high" of being able to feel.
