Low End Theory isn't the only jazz rap classic to have its birthday today. 30 years ago today The Roots dropped this banger.

Low End Theory was released 35 years ago OTD. Not just a landmark rap release but simply one of the greatest albums of all time. Its jazz influences and stripped back emphasis on the bass and kick drum inspired a generation of producers.

If Carlsberg did punk funk spectaculars! OTD 43 years ago Minor Threat played their last ever gig, sharing a stage with Trouble Funk. How freaking awesome must this gig have been.

Horns of Jericho was released OTD 35 years ago (well according to my copy of HHC). At the time of its release Hijack were UK hip-hop's most feted group, a series of seminal Britcore singles having ensured they were talked about in hushed tones. Yet shortly after the LPs release they had split.

First shown 20 years ago OTD, Alfonso Cuaron's blistering adaptation of Children Of Men. IMO probably the greatest mainstream movie of the 21st century. Unfortunately each passing year of Farageism, makes it feel less dystopian sci-fi and more prescient warning.

Released OTD 35 years ago. Pure Poverty by Poor Righteous Teachers. I played this to death when it was released. And no wonder - PRT managed to effortlessly incorporate dancehall stylings into their 5 percenter funk. Fly high Father Shaheed. youtu.be/0zc248RkuPk?...

The 1st theatrical release of Charlie Ahearn's Wild Style was in Japan rather than the US. As part of a press junket the cast were brought to Japan for 30 days where they enthusiastically set about promoting not just the movie but hip-hop culture generally.

"The South got something to say". Released OTD 30 years ago ATLiens saw 2 dope boys in a Cadillac transform into Afro-futuristic time travellers. Rejecting both boom bap and gangster rap, Outkast created their own bass heavy, echo-drenched sound, confounding expectations of southern bass music.

This track, when performed live at Glasgow's Barrowlands in 87 so enraged the locals that it led to a mini-riot which saw the gig abruptly terminated as LLs entourage plus @chuckdpe.bsky.social and the rest of the Def Jam posse faced off against the crowd. Still one of the best gigs of my life!

Caught Ellis-D live at McChuills last night. Wow what a performer and what a ridiculously tight band! Go see his full throttle art rock attack if he's playing near you. Just be careful that he doesn't decapitate you when he decides it's more fun performing from the crowd than the stage.
