I mean not for all disputes obviously like I don't think we should settle who controls the strait of Hormuz with a session of Warhammer 40K, well actually you know what no I think we should

When I was a kid I read a time travel choose your own adventure book where at the end you see two knights trying out a new (to Europe) game called chess and someone's like maybe someday we can solve disputes this way instead of with war and it always makes me sad and wistful

I recently asked my dad, "Did your parents mean to have 11 kids?" and he said, "No, no" and I was like "Oh I guess they just didn't have birth cont-" and he said "they meant to have 10" and everyone laughed, and he was like "why is that funny"

I feel like people unfairly connect nice robots in movies as leading to loving real life AIs. I like movie robots more than anything, Iron Giant, R2, Data, Legion, but people touting a chatbot as the same makes me mad like "you like unicorns, here's a real life one" and it's a horse with a party hat

This reminds me, when I was playing Quest for Glory 2 in uh 1990, it looks like, there was a weaselly character named Ugarte who sells you info and gets arrested and I was like ok this is clearly a reference to something, I have no idea what questforglory.fandom.com/wiki/Ugarte
questforglory.fandom.com
Ugarte
Ugarte is the nephew of Lorre Petrovich and is one of Ferrari's henchmen. He was involved in water smuggling in Raseir. Ferrari introduces Ugarte to the Hero at the Blue Parrot Inn and sells some info...

At lunch my dad said Trump's immigration stance is hypocritical and inconsistent and I was like well it's actually pretty consistent: if you're white you stay, if you're not white you leave. After an awkward silence my dad looked at my son and said "half of you is going to have to go back to China"

I'm trying to imagine what the citation for "people" should be like maybe census data but if we want to be comprehensive maybe the bible or something for like a full origin coverage

I don't know why but we watched this, Star Wars, and The Last Unicorn over and over again at church babysitting every week, Bay Area, California. Chinese church, uh, 1980s

I like that the first "reveal" of Cloud's origin implies he was a failed lab grown experiment with fake memories and he's like oh no but that's still better (cooler) than the real truth he's still blocking out: that he was the kind faceless security guard you mowed down at the beginning of the game

I can only conclude that if someone were to make Oceans Final Fantasy 7-Eleven, which I don't even know what form of media it would be, it would be my favorite thing in the world and I wouldn't understand a second of it

Also while I'm on it, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit books where for most grand world changing events your protagonists were just sort of there and someone else (Bard, Faramir, Ents) did the heroic deed or made the noble decision, which upset kid me but is good. Too bad the movies didn't think so

Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 12h
I was kinda of upset when it was revealed that actually Cloud was not actually an elite operator but kind of a loser because I was like that's MY character! I'M a loser? And also when Guybrush keeps solving mazes I'm proud of and all the other characters are already there. I think it was good for me

Haha how about a classic game hot take: everybody loves Planescape Torment but the games that really messed with my mindset of how I, the protagonist, am the world's most special cool boy (all protagonists were boys) were FF7 and Monkey Island while honestly Planescape Torment just maximizes that

I mean that was even always the narrative I got in school like, ok the industrial revolution started out really rough and kids got ground up in machines but that was a temporary kink that got worked out and a necessary sacrifice for you to have your uh cars and nintendos and labubus today

I see a lot of takes on here that this villain talk will get him in trouble and I do think it's especially bad given who he is but conservative "free market" people have always been saying and nodding along to stuff like this, progress has growing pains etc etc, probably a comforting cliche to them

I didn't see anyone make any direct comparisons anywhere (although I have seen comparisons to other similar themed movies) but it seems like Digger is trying to do something similar to Asteroid City but not doing it well?

A nice lady gave the kids some mini American flags at a No Kings protest we went to and every time I see them lying around the house somewhere I'm taken back to the inspiring and unifying quote: "abortions for some, miniature American flags for others"

This is important context on the "AI of murder victim said he forgives his killer at trial" story, in that the judge DID gullibly say wow this seems real but this led to him giving a LONGER sentence because the defendant killed such a nice guy, almost like reverse psychology by the victim's family

A lot of motivation comes from the bosses themselves but in parallel a certain type of customer complains about seeing like cashiers sitting down and I cannot get that mindset. Like even purely from self interest I get nervous when people I interact with are unhappy, like something might go wrong

Is the name Alek Karp to try to get people excited that maybe Alex Karp is personally emailing them? Do they also use like Dariu Amodei or Bull Gates or Marf Zuckerberg

We really should be wishing the least special place in hell on people who are really bad. General admission, lost in the crowd, standing room only, have to go through the long security line

There's a special place in Hell for people like me. It's cushy. Comfortable seating and ample snacks. It's not nearly as painful as the Hell for ordinary people.

Another thing is, are you sure these awesome improvements in the latest models are going to make it out as updates to all the applications already rushed out and deployed in everyday life? You know a lot of hospitals are still using windows 95

I think it's bad when people are like "the shitty AI this burger place uses for orders can't count, therefore no AI can count" but I also think it's bad when people are like "it's silly people get so mad at AI when their pharmacist AI gave them the wrong dose when my Claude 47 solves that perfectly"
121
Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 02/10/2026
And the answer is obviously it depends, like when talking about what AI could do someday, you should talk about the most advanced ones, but if you're talking about its impact on society, you should talk about the ones people run into everyday. But people should agree on which one before arguing
230
Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 02/10/2026
And there's a tendency to be like, ok the person using the newest one is "correct", and the person experiencing only the shitty ones are ignorant, but which one counts as the most "common sense" definition in a discussion, how advanced it is or how used it is and how many people it actually impacts
120
Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 02/10/2026
Especially when people argue about whether it can do something or not, and one person has only experienced free ones that are forced on them by their HMO or school or a shop, that are cheap and have even shittier wrappers, and the other person is doing cutting edge research on the new expensive ones
120
Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 02/10/2026
I think we're actually already doing this like A: AI (customer service chatbot) doesn't even work! B: AI (expensive model) works better than ever! It can count now! A: But AI (free image generator on social media platform) violates privacy B: Oh you're against AI (medical image scanner)??

I guess kind of like the melting senator from X-Men (2000). You know what, if Marvel really wants to do something different they could reboot the melting senator. A guy who was really against mutants until he became a mutant could have been an interesting story, not sure why they just killed him

Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 02/10/2026
Maybe it's just this guy and that Lindy Man guy which isn't really a trend but I did have to look at their avatars a lot on twitter and I don't understand what's appealing about a drawing of yourself that looks like you are sick and are kind of melting and sloughing away sideways from the top

People who are sure they'd never do anything bad are generally people that don't regularly check in with themselves when they decide to do stuff and think about if they're about to do something bad

Christina Holland @mortalwombat.info · 02/10/2026
I was thinking about if everyone would go insane with power if they were as rich as Elon Musk and start a harem or get paranoid about the lessers rising up. Nobody knows for sure what they'd do, but the people you gotta watch out for are the people who say "no, definitely" without thinking first

If NFL broadcasters are going to treat Deshaun Watson being ok at QB as a sign that he has been Redeemed For His Past, they must remain ideologically consistent. If he starts playing badly again they have to blame it on his failure to repent for his heinous sexual misconduct
