#NASAWebb has provided a crash course on planet-shattering collisions, providing clues to the amount of energy in their collisions. (1/6) 🧵 🔭 🧪
Artist’s concept of a star and its debris disk against the black background of space. The star is in the background, right of center, and depicted as a small, luminous sphere. The debris disk is a large blue ring that encircles the star. The debris disk is angled toward the viewer, so that the portion nearest to the viewer extends beyond the bottom frame of the illustration. Many dark, rocky fragments are scattered throughout the debris disk. In the foreground, toward the left, is a small planetary embryo colliding into the left side of a larger spherical object. The impact site glows bright yellow and orange and has a mottled appearance, as though chunks of both colliding bodies are breaking up and being destroyed. Orange-yellow streams of vapor extend outward from the collision area. Behind the debris disk and its star are many small stars in the background. A label in the bottom right corner reads “Artist’s Concept.”

This is a photograph of the edge of one of Saturn's rings, looking down from above. Those spiky dark shapes are shadows. Shadows of giant towers of ice and dust grains clumped together that rise up to three *kilometres* above the 10-m thick rings.
A series of bands cross the image from left to right, brighter at the bottom and darkening towards the top. A band of empty space is at the top of the image. About a quarter down from the top is a complex pattern of jagged, spiky shadows cast onto the rings. The icy towers casting the shadows are seen here at a highly oblique angle.

Keeping the Voyagers alive has become an extraordinary act of engineering care. Their power comes from the heat of decaying plutonium, and each spacecraft loses about four watts every year. JPL's Suzanne Dodd and Kareem Badaruddin are helping make those choices. More: explorers.com/keeping-voya...

I may have shared this before somewhere, but here’s some katydid faces from Costa Rica, a land of many fine bugs
A collage of nine colorful katydid faces. Most have tall, rectangular heads large eyes of variable color, green, red, yellow, white, bright blue. Most have “staring” pseudopupils, a trick of the light and human facial recognition. On several, the three simple eyes are quite plainly seen, two between the antennae and one below those. Most are green, but some are brown and one has a bright blue face. Several are ornamented with a “forehead” horn or crown of spikes.
